Graduates from the U.S. Military Academy
At the age of 17, Grant joined the U.S.M.A. At the academy he was known for being fearless. He graduated in 1843 and became a regimental quartermaster after ranking 21st in a class of 39. -
Siege of Vicksburg
Grant led a six week siege at Vicksburg. The City of Vicksburg surrendered and the Confederates gave up. With this victory, the Union has now controlled the entire Mississippi River. Also the South was split into two parts, following the Anaconda Plan. -
Becomes Lieutenant General
Lincoln made Grant the Lieutenant General which made him the general-in-chief of all the Union armies. Confederates have to be on their toes due to the demands of Grant keeping the Union armies in unison. -
Makes Robert E. Lee Surrender
The Union had captured Petersburg and Richmond. Lee was running out of me and supplies where as Grant had a steady supply of both. Confederates General Robert E. Lee surrendered at Appomattox Courthouse. Grant offered generous terms to Lee because he knew that the South and the Union were now united. -
Inaugurated 18th President
Grant joined the Republican Party in the election of 1868. His slogan was "Let Us Have Peace". Grant won the electoral vote by an astounding margin and the popular vote by 300,000 votes. -
15th Amendment
The 15th Amendment of the Constitution was signed by Grant giving black males the right to vote. The Department of Justice was established after a request from Grant for justice for African American's newly freed. -
Second Enforcement Act
KKK violence in California is stopped by troops. The Second Enforcement Act stops the KKK and other white supremacist groups from denying African American their rights. Habeas Corpus was suspended in South Carolina where Grant was getting racial threats. -
Second Inauguration as President
Grant ran for his second term as President being the Republican nominee. He was re-elected president carrying 31 out of 37 states. His running mate was Henry Wilson who was the 18th Vice President. -
Civil Rights Act of 1875 is Passed
The Civil Rights Act of 1875 guaranteed African Americans equal treatment. Racial discrimination of African Americans was big reason this Act got passed. Public accommodations, public transportation, the right to serve on juries, and other facilities were protected for any race to use. -
Swindled into Debt and Civil War Memoirs
Ferdinand Ward who got help from Grant start his banking business swindled Grant and took his fortune. This left Grant in a huge amount of debt. He had start to right his memoirs of the Civil War. These were published in Mark's Twain Company where he gained money trying to erase the debt.
