Gaining National Unity
To complete the unification of Italy, the government designed a policy of irredentism, which in Italy, united all people of Italian ethnicity. Outsiders were also encouraged to join. -
World War l
Italy was first apart of the Triple Alliance, however shortly after they joined the Triple Entente in order to gain territories such as, Dalmatia. Since the Entente was victorious, Italy did gain land except for Dalmatia. -
Aftermath of WWl
A new order was very necessary to get Italies economy back on track. After the war the country had huge debt,high unemployment and decreased trade. -
Treaty of Versaille
Italians believed that they were poorly represented by the Treaty. They didnt recieve Dalmatia,which they were promised before, and where a significant minority of Italian speaking people lived, and which had been once apart of the Roman Empire. -
Fascist Uprise
Italians grew a strong sense of Patriotism, which inspired Mussolini to create a political party (Fasci). However, in the 1919 elections they had little support and the Socialist Party had more support. Fasci saw a break to gain support if they attacked the other party. Eventually the Fasci created a "single-party state" that overthrew other political parties. -
Power of Mussolini
Since the war led to unemployment and unrest in many parts of Italy, and Italy believed it was poorly rewarded by the Treaty, there was increasing support for Benito Mussolini, the leader of the Fascist Party. He promised to rebuild Italy and recreate the Roman Empire. -
The Great Depression
Italy was not hit hard by this and that is because Mussolini established a state controlled economy. This fortunately kept the economy strong. Many people showed their appreciativeness towards Mussolini. -

Mussolini created a great empire, and Italy allied with Germany during the war. However, they were quickly defeated because of their weak army. Mussolinis popularity crumbled and he no longer had power.
