In May of 2008 the Holly Square was the victim of local gang violence. A fire caused damage to 7 of the 8 businesses in the Square.

During the spring of 2009 the community united in opposition to a new liquor store near the Holly. The residents collected signatures, and appeared at local town hall meetings to protest.

To gather support for possible reinvestment opportunities for the Holly ULC and Strengthening Neighborhoods created the Holly Area Reinvestment Project (HARP). This community organization held meetings at the local Hiawatha Davis Jr. Recreational Center, across the street from the Holly Lot.

Community members were able to view potential building plans, and offer their opinions.

In October of 2010 basketballs courts and hoops were installed. These courts were open to all neighborhood kids and families.

In January 2011 the Holly Peace Pole art project was completed and opened to the community.

In the Fall of 2011 the Holly mural project was completed.
