The Gunpowder Plot
A failed assassination attempt against King James I of England and VI of Scotland by a group of provincial English Catholics led by Robert Catesby. The plan was to blow up the House of Lords during the State Opening of England's Parliament on 5 November 1605, when James' 9yo daughter (Elizabeth) was going to be installed as the Catholic head of state. The plot was revealed to the authorities in an anonymous letter sent to William Parker, 4th Baron Monteagle, on 26 October 1605. -

The Sinking of the Titanic
Titanic struck an iceberg at 23:40, 14th of april 1912, with an estimated 2224 people onboard. Titanic recieved six warnings of sea ice on the 14th, but was travelling near her top speed, when the iceberg was sighted. Almost all those who jumped/fell into the water died. RMS Carpathia arrived at the scene 1 1/2 hour later. The disaster caused widespread outrage over the lack of lifeboats, lax regulations, and the unequal treatment of the three passenger classes during the evacuation. -
