EWB-GT Uganda Program Begins
-
First Assessment Trip
The team took their first assessment trip to Oloo, Uganda in December of 2012. This trip served to establish and build relations with the community. Upon consulting with the community, it was determined that the greatest need was for an accessible source of clean water. -
Second Assessment Trip
The decision was made to eventually install a solar-powered, gravity-fed water distribution system in the community. The community and the travel team both signed the EWB partnership agreement, each committing to contribute as needed to the project. The team began seeking out contractors in the region to aid in the construction of the first phase of the project – the digging of a borehole well. -
First Implementation Trip
Local contractors installed a borehole well and India Mark-II handpump in Oloo. A soak-away pit was dug to collect and filter any excess water and a chainlink fence was built to keep wild animals away from the well. In addition, the team trained three village members who would be responsible for the upkeep of the well until the implementation of the second phase of the project. -
Second Implementation Trip
During our second implementation trip, we installed an array of solar panels to supply electricity to the newly installed electric pump. We also installed a storage tank so that water can be reliably supplied throughout the year.
