William Seward bought Alaska from Russia in 1867 for 7.2 million dollars. Alaska proved to be resourceful as it supplied gold, timber, and oil. -
McKinley Tariff
The McKinley act of 1890 raised the average duty on imports 50% in order to protect American companies from foreign companies. This act also caused a dramatic increase of the tax rates of foreign goods. Americans didn’t like the increase of money due to this act even though business owners did, namely because they were profiting. Many people were forced to stick to manufactured goods in their own country due to money costs. -

Senator Henry Teller proposed an amendment to the U.S. declaration of war against Spain in 1898. This stated that the United states would not establish permanent control over Cuba. This amendment was created to ensure that the issues between America and Spain could be resolved. -

Spanish-American war
The Spanish-American War was caused by the sinking of Maine and the struggle of Cuba for independence from Spain. This war consisted of many hard battles including the Battle of Manila Bay which was led by Commodore George Dewey. The war eventually ended with the creation of the Treaty of Paris. It showed an agreement consisting of Spain claiming all of Cuba, Guam and Puerta Rica being given to the United States, and transferring authority of the Philippines to the United States for $20million. -

The United states annexed Hawaii in order to remove a possible threat of a devastating tariff on their sugar. They also did this because they were interested in expanding trade in the Far East. -

The open door policy stated that their would be protection of equal privileges among the countries that were trading with china. This policy also called for the support of Chinese territory. -
Boxer Rebellion
The boxer rebellion was an uprising against foreigners that occurred in china around 1900s. This was begun by peasants but the spoon turned into a group supported by the government. The boxers started a violent campaign to send all those foreigners away. However some countries sent troops to stop them from attacking. -
Roosevelt Corollary
The Roosevelt Corollary stated that the United states would intervene to make sure the nations on the western hemisphere completed their obligations to international creditors. It was also to make sure they didn’t violate the rights of the United States. This Corollary was issued by Theodore Roosevelt. -
Panama Canal
The Panama Canal was a 50 mile, man-made canal that connected the Pacific and Atlantic ocean. This canal was constructed by the United states. The canal was important because it permitted shippers of goods, and saved time and money. -
Sinking of the Maine
The night of February 15, 1898 a US battleship called Maine sunk in the Havana harbor. This was said to be caused by a mine which caused an explosion that tore the bottom the the ship killing 260 officers and men. To this day no one is 100% sure who or what caused this but blame was pinned on the Spanish which led to the Spanish-American War.
