    Billy Bishop, helped to advance Canada's reputation as a reputable air force in WWI.
    Bishop soon became a famous fighter pilot because of his exploits.
    Many of his achievements are debated, the public was fascinated by such examples of Bishop flying across enemy lines and attacking a German aerodrome, shooting down three German planes.

    Francis Pegahmagabow and First Nations soldiers
    Francis Pegahmagabow, was an Ojibwa from the Parry Island Band in Ontario and one of 4 000 Indigenous Peoples who served in the war. He became one of the original members of the 1st Canadian Infantry Battalion and fought at the 2nd battle of Ypres in April 1915 and the battle of the Somme in the fall of 1916.

    Jeremiah Jones and Black Canadian Soldiers
    Jeremiah Jones enlisted in the 106th overseas battalion, commanded by LT Col W.H. Allan. At Vimy Ridge, he was among the 16 black soldiers assigned to the Royal Canadian Regiment. During the Battle of Vimy Ridge in April of 1917, Jones rescued his unit from an enemy machine gun nest in what was to become a battle that is now known as Canada's greatest success and source of great national pride.
    More important, he had also proven a black man's worth in a white man's army.

    Mae Belle Sampson was the first nurse in the Hamilton area to enlist for service overseas during the outbreak of the First World War as a member of the Canadian Army Medical Corps.
    Women were not allowed to enlist as soldiers, sailors, or pilots in World War I. Their role in the military was quite limited.
    These nurses worked in dangerous, overcrowded and stressful conditions.
    Hospitals were set up in tents or barns, and were under equipped to deal with the massive casualties.
