Missori Compromise
In the Missouri Compromise, the main issue was whether new states would be admitted as free or slave states. In the Missouri Compromise, the North and South were impacted differently because it affected the balance of power in Congress. The Missouri Compromise increased tensions by making slavery a national political issue. -
Nullification Crisis
The main issue was that tarrifs were being put on foreign goods. This impacted the southern states because they saw this as unconstitutional. They're refused to pay the tarrifs, saying that the states should get to choose their own laws. This led to more sectionalism because we now had these people made over tariffs and wanting the power in states or federal. -
Uncle Tom' Cabin
The main issue of Uncle Tom's cabin was that the fugitive Slave law was cruel and the issue of slavery in general. The North's public was impacted by this, as plays were developed and wealthy white northerners were touched by what slavery actually looks like. This increased sectionalism because now that the north had seen slavery through the slaves eyes, they were in despise of the south and souths' ways. -
The Compromise of 1850
In the Compromise of 1850, the main issue was that if California became a free state after they applied for statehood, there would be more free states than slave states. An impact of this was that California was admitted as a free state, and the rest of the Mexican Secession Territory would be decided through popular sovereignty. This increased tension between the North and South because the North was losing 3 states to popular sovereignty and the South only lost 2 states. -
Fugitive Slave Law
In the fugitive Slave law, the main issue was that slaves were running away to the north and completely free after that. Slaves were impacted by this because they were now living in fear of being caught in the North, where they used to be free. This event caused Sectionalism because the northerners were becoming "slave hunting," a fines and getting paid for turning in slaves, turning them away from abolition. The south was just happy that their "property" was getting returned. -
Kansas-Nebraska Act
The main issue of the Kansas - Nebraska Act was that Senator Stephen Douglas proposed an idea of dividing the land west of Missori into Kansas and Nebraska, then giving them each popular sovereignty. This impacted the government, as they were now split up, and people like John Brown, who after hearing this, got mad and later started Bleeding Kansas. This shows sectionalism by people being divided; supporters of the missouri compromise vs supporters of the new idea of popular sovereignty. -
Bleeding Kansas and the Pottawatomie Massacre
The main issue was that Charles Sumner was killed with a cane after delivering a speech 2 days earlier, talking bad about Butler. Brooks, a relative of Butler, got mad and beat Charles to death. This and the destrying of Lawrence impacted John Brown, he grabbed his 4 sons +2 other men and headed to Kansas, killing many Ruffians. It also impacted the pro slavery people; they attacked John Brown and his men. This increased sectionalism since a Kansas civil war broke out; proslaver vs ablotionists. -
Dred Scott Decision
The main issue was that Dred Scott, a former slave who had escaped into the North(free states), was being told by the court that he was property and was to be taken back. This impacted Dred Scott and those who believed that being in free states meant you were free. Dred Scott was told he couldn't testify, and was still property despite being in the North. This increased sectionalism because it showed northerners just how determined the south was to keeping slavery, widening the gap between them. -
John Brown Raid and Trial
The main issue was that Slavery was still going on and John believed it could only be sloved with violence. This impacted John, as after he led the revolt, he was charged with death. This also impacted the ablitionists becuase they now believed violence was the answer. The southerners saw him as a terrorist. This increased sectionalism because John was a famous leader, so people seeing him dead becuase of thism caused them to realize it was going to be bloody. -
The Election of Abraham Lincoln
The main issue was that Lincoln was going to abolish slavery if he won. When he did win, this affected the slaves, as they would be freed, the northerners, because they were abolitionists, and the south, who hated this so much they seceded from the US. This later led to the civil war. This was the final ripping point of the tape, the US was now completely divided, and sectionalism was at its peak.
