In the Missouri Compromise, the main issue was whether new states would be admitted as free or slave states. In the Missouri Compromise, the North and the South were impacted differently because it affected the balance of power in congress. The Missouri Compromise increased tensions by making slavery a national political issue -
Nullification Crisis
The main issue of the nullification crisis was the government said that the South could not trade with other countries. The South was impacted because they decided to break the laws that the government put out. This increased sectionalism because it seemed to the South as if the rest of the country was against them. -
Fugitive Slave Act
The main issue of this act was that the freed slaves had to return to their owner and the North wasn't happy about this because they should be free as they thought. Slave were impacted by this because they couldnt get away from the South or the plantation they were from because they had to be brought back where if you left the plantation you were most likely beaten or even worse. This increased tensions because the North believed if they got away they were considered free. -
The Compromise of 1850
The main issue for the Compromise of 1850 is that California was also under the 36 30 line and that people in the West since it was good farm land they farmed. California didn't really have a choice to be a slave state but the people farming didn't want to work a whole bunch because it was just easier to have someone else do it so the farmers weren't very happy and caused tensions. The west was impacted by this because this was one of the first states way in the west and it was a free state. -
Uncle Toms Cabin
The main issue of Uncle Toms Cabin is that people started to realize that slavery was a bad thing and the South was getting mad that people were going to think bad about them so they made books to rebel against Uncle Toms Cabin. The South was impacted heavily by everyone seeing the bad stuff that they were doing. This increased tensions because the people from the North and the South were getting more divided by the more arguing they would do about Uncle Toms Cabin. -
Kansas-Nebraska Act
The main issue of the Kansas-Nebraska Act was that is was above the 36 30 line/Missouri compromise line which was a line through close to the middle of the U.S. were anything above the line had no slavery and everything below the line had slavery. This made the North mad because if Kansas or Nebraska turned into a slave state then it would be breaking that compromise and this is how the North was impacted. And the South liked it because then they would get more land so this created tensions. -
Bleeding Kansas and Pottawotmie Massacre
The main issues of these conflicts is that they were very violent. A reason why Bleeding Kansas and the Pottawotmie Massacre was violent because people from across the country tried to get into Kansas and vote for it to be a free or slave state and people were rioting about how bad or good slavery was and it turned into violent fights. Both the North and the South were impacted the same because they both started to hate each other more and it increased tensions between the North and the South. -
Dred Scott Decison
The issue of this was that Dred Scott was a free man for his entire life but because he was African American the South wanted to him to return to the South even though he wasnt from there. African Americans and the North was effected by this decision because it pretty much made whoever was African American to run for their life from the South. And the North was mad because he was an author and did nothing wrong. Sectionalism increased because the North got very mad at the South. -
The Election of Abraham Lincoln
The main issue of the election of Abraham Lincoln was that the South thought he was going to abolish slavery right away so then states started to leave the country. The South and North were impacted because it made the South leave and the North was getting mad that their country was getting completly divided. This caused sectionalism because the South actually split off the country to make their own. -
John Browns Raid and Trial
John Brown wanted to lead a slave rebellion and tried to take over Harpers Ferry(military base) and was going to get guns into slaves hands. The South and North was impacted by this because John Brown, an Abolitionist, was being violent. Which none of the Northern Abolitionists were. The South was impacted because it kind of made them scared of John Brown and they saw how much the North hated slavery. This created sectionalism because it caused violence between the North and the South.
