Opening Trade With Japan
Was set in motion when commodore Matthew Perry Came into the harbor at tokyo bay with Four
ships. Perry Gave the emporer gifts from the wests mostly technology that the japanes did
not have and a mild range of western liqours. These gifts were in exchange for the allowence
of U.S ships to be docked in japan to resupply and rest. Later Perry came back with More
battleships and the president in hopes of signing a treaty that would open trade.

Alaska Purchase
The Alaska Purchase is was thought of as Seward's Folly because The Secretary of state at
the time was William H. Seward who was the Negotiator when making the purchase. As Seward's
Folly suggests many people thought that Seward was getting Ripped off by buying alaska but
in later years it proved to be worth it's weight in gold when we found Oil beneath the ice. -
Spanish American War
The war was primarily Fought over Cuban independance even though It was mostly fought in the
carribean and Pacific. The Naval Forces proved to be more than the Spanish forces could
handle. Even thought the spanish fought feircely for Ground like San Juan Hill the spanish
were forced to retreat to defend the spanish coast. -
Annexation of Hawaii
The main purpose of the Annextion was to extend the U.S territory into the pacific and
resulted from the U.S's Increase in Naval Firepower. Hawaii's Climate allowed the U.S to
grow Sugarcane and exotic fruits which became U.S exports. Many Sugar Plantation owners came
to Hawaii to rule the economy there. -
Open Door Policy with China
A policy that allowed International powers to have equal access to china with none of them
in control of china. It was supposed to be used to keep other countries from taking pieces
of china but it was instead used to mediate interests of international powers without input
from china. -
Boxer Rebellion
Violent Anti Christian movement started by the Chinese. Lead to British and American forces
fighting against the chinese in the battle of tientsen. -
Panama Canal
The panama Canal's building design required 3 groups of workers and engineers who were hired
just to make the area surounding livable. The panama Canal was Finsihed in 1914 and cost the
U.s $375,000,000. -
Plat Amendment
The Plat Amendment dictated the conditions in which US troops withdrew from Cuba at the end
of the spanish war and defined Cuba's Relationship with the U.S. -
Roosevelt Corollary
Originally the Monroe Docterate Discouraged europeon countries from going into Latin
countries. The Roosevelt Corollary further discouraged it by stating that any europeon
country who does interact with a latin country can be acted upon with military force.
