  • Treaty of Wangxia Established

    Treaty of Wangxia Established
    The Treaty of Wangxia was an agreement between the United States and China. It caled for extraterritoriality, where U.S. citizens could only be tried by U.S. consula officials, it fixed tariffs on trade, granted the right to buy land in the five treaty ports and erect churches and hospitals there, and finally the right to learn Chinese by abolishing a law which hitherto forbade foreigners to do so. The treaty also gave the U.S received most-favored-nation status.

    A diplomatic intervention by Russia, Germany, and France ending the first Sino-Japanese War. Over the terms of the Treaty of Shimonoseki, that was signed by Japan and Qing dynasty in China. Changed balance of power in Pacific politically and militarily. Revealed the true world powers.

  • Boxer Rebeliion

    Boxer Rebeliion
    During a time of severe drought and economic disruption, the Boxer Rebellion was a response to the growth of foreign spheres of influence by the Righteous Harmony Society in China. It effected the world economically, socially, and politically. Economically China's economy would soon arise from a depression after this event. Socially it established more pro-nationalist beliefs and eradicated opposing foreign imperialism and Christian missions. Politically it instituted a new Government.

    Provided military gain by establishing a naval base in the Caribbean. Would eventually lead to a place for imprisonment of war criminals and enemies of the state. Still exists today.

    U.S. acquired Canal Zone
    Economic gain by facilitating trade with Asia. Goods have faster route from Pacific to Atlantic. Canal toll fees make money for United States.
  • Treaty of Portsmouth Signed

    Treaty of Portsmouth Signed
    The Treaty of Portsmouth officially ended the Russo- Japanese War. Signed at the Portsmouth Naval Base with the help of President Theodore Roosevelt, the treaty ended fighting between Russia and Japan, amoung others. The agreement forced both Russia and Japan to evacuate Manchuria and return it to China. Other minimal effects also arose from the treaty. It set the balance of power in the Pacific for the next century, both polictial power and military power.

    The region of Honduras was unstable due to constant government coups. Manuel Bonilla was a president who favored trade and had treaties with other US allies and was in favor of improved water ways. This gave the US reason to support him and aided in his maintaining of power.

    The government was against the proposal of a Nicaraguan Canal.To add the canal, the United States aided a rebellion against President Zelaya.
  • Panama Canal completed

    It costed the US $7.5 billion in today's dollar value and also cost 5,600 lives when America was incharge of the building and 20,000 when the French were in charge. Despite these costs, the US made much more back with a toll fee of $54/container for large vessels and between $500-$1500 for ships between 50ft and 100ft in length. However, the US no longer profits from the canal as Pres. Carter began to transferr control to Panama in 1977. This was finished in 2000.

    In order to protect US trade interests, the US invaded Haiti. US coorporations ran trade routes between Cuba and Haiti so protection was needed.

    With the Dominican Republic facing an uprising, a government coup, and an unbalanced budget, the United States intervened to ensure the protection of their trade routes and naval bases in the region. A new government power that opposed international trade would prevent the US from using the DR as a port on the way to the new territory of Puerto Rico (1898).

    US Purchases Virgin Islands
    The US purchased the Virgin Islands from Demnmark to create a series of ports and naval bases to stop at on trade routes to South America. Their close proximity to eachother and Puerto Rico allowed for ships to have multiple options to stop at. Also, it gave the US more territory from wich to import resources to the mainland, Puerto Rico, and their other Carribean territories.

    Open Door Policy Takes Off
    After the Japanese seizure of Manchuria in 1931, the Open Door policy in China. The Open Door policy was China's policy of opening up the the rest of the world. It allowed for increased trade with another country and the introduction of new goods from China.
