    Domino Theory
    The domino theory is a theory that if one country falls to communism all others around it will fall as well. This fear gripped the US from the 1950's to around the 1980's.

    The purpose was to attempt to find a way to settle outstanding issues in Korea. All the countries that sent troops into the Korean War attended.
  • Thurgood Marshall

    Thurgood Marshall
    On May 17, 1954 Marshall was in front of the Supreme Court arguing in the famous Brown v. Board of Education. Marshall won and desegragated public schools. Marshall won a total of 29 cases out of 32 that were in front of the Supreme Court.

    Diem was the first president of South Korea. Hhe was backed by the US because he shared our interests and ideas. However he was a brutal leader and was hated by many south koreans.

  • Viet Cong

    The Viet Cong were a militia group in Vietnam who fought against the US and South Vietnamese. They used a vast network of tunnels underground to hide and attack from.

    The SDS or the Student for a Democratic Society were a group of college students who opposed the Vietnam War. The led many protest on college grounds to try and get their voices heard.
  • Living Room War

    The Vietnam War was known by many as the Living Room War. This is because this was the first time the wars atrocities were shown in Americans living rooms. It great effectly the peoples opinions about the war.
  • Guerrilla Warfare

    Guerrilla warfare is a form of irregular warfare in which a small group of combatants attack the enemy and leave as soon as possible. The Viet Cong used this strategy to overpower the US and South Vietnamese.

    Southern Manifesto

    The Declaration of Constitutional Principles as it is formally known was written in oppisition to the integration of public places. It was signed by 101 politicians and was drafted to counter the Brown v. Board of Education ruling.

    Ross Barnett
    On January 19, 1960 Barnett was sworn into office as the Govenor of Mississippi. He was responsible for the arrests of the Freedom Riders in 1961 and then imprisoned them at Parchman Farms where they were brutally treated.

    The Russians put up the Berlin Wall and it completely cut off East Berlin from West Berli. The people were trapped in East Berlin. President Reagan made his famous sppech saying "Mr. Gorbachev tear down this wall."

  • James Meredith

    James Meredith
    Meredith was the first African American student to attend the University of Mississippi. He was inspired by John F. Kennedy's speech the previous day and decided to enroll. The process was long but Meredith won the right to attend.

  • Nelson Mandela

    Mandela ended the arparteid in South Africa after spending 27 years in prison. He was released and became the president of South Africa.

    This ordeal lasted 13 days and was a show down between America and Russia. Russia was trying to transport nuclear missiles into Cuba but President Kennedy put up a blockade and said if the Russians passed it they would start a nuclear war.

    George Wallace
    On January 14, 1963 Wallace was sworn into office as the Govenor of Alabama. On June 11, 1963 Wallace and some other politicians who were against the integration of schools stood in front of Foster Aditorium blocking the path of the African American students trying to get to class.

    Medger Evers
    Evers was a civil rights activist in Mississippi. He was the first field secretary in Mississippi and organized many boycotts and set up new local chapters of the NAACP. He was assassinated on June 12, 1963 by Byron De La Beckwith in front of his house.

    24th Amendment
    The 24th Amendment was ratified by the states on January 23, 1964, The amendment prohibited the states and the government from forcing voters to pay a poll tax or any other tax in order to vote.

    Freedom Summer
    The summer of 1964 was known as the Freedom Summer Project. The goal was to get as many African Americas registered to vote as possible. The white citizens of Mississippi were not pleased and resorted to violence against the volunteers.

    Operation Rolling Thunder was a series of aerial attacks on the North Vietnamese by the US and South Vietnamese. This plan was not affective because it burned many farms that the plan was meant to protect.

    Selma Marches
    Marchers wanted to march from Selma to the state capital, Montgomery. The were protesting the African Americans lack of the right to vote. The sheriff of Selma, Bull Connors, stopped the march in horrific ways. He sprayed them with fire hoses and set dogs on them. The actions were televised and all the U.S saw.

    In late 1969 Ellsberg made copies of the pentagon papers, which were a set of secret operations done by the US during many wars. He then Made them public and exposed the governments secrets.

    Betty Friedan co-founded and was the first president of NOW (the Nation Organization of Women). NOW aimed to make the women and men equal in American society.

  • Plumbers

    The Plumbers were a group of men hired by Nixon to break into the Democratic headquarters. They bugged the room because Nixon thought that they were out to get him.
  • Watergate

    On June 17, 1972 President Nixon ordered a break-in of the Democratic headquarters. He was trying to find out what the democrats were up to because he thoght they were plotting to overthrow him and take office. This led to the biggest cover up in our history. He resigned after most likely about to be impeached.
  • US Casualties

    The war was brutal for the Vietnamese. They lost many more civilians and military personel then the US. The US casualties were around 53,000 soldiers.

  • Woodward and Berstein

    Woodward and Berstein were reporters from the Wasington Post and were assigned to cover a break in at the democratic headquarters. It proved to much more than it seemed. They had an informant Deepthroat and he told them it all traced back to President Nixon.
  • Shuttle Diplomacy

    Shuttle diplomacy was used by Henry Kissinger and Richard Nixon to help solve the Cold War. It greatly helped the tension between the US, Russia, and China. Nixon would go to China and make the Russians feel like they were left out then he would go to Russia and the Chinese would feel left out it broke the barrier between the three nations.
  • Long National Nightmare

    President Gerald Ford took the place of Richard Nixon after the Watergate Scandel. In his inauguration speech he described the event as the "long national nightmare". He said it was now over and the public should not think about it anymore.
  • Three Mile Island

    Three Mile Island had a nuclear power plant on it. But in 1979 that power plant almost had a meltdown when the equipment used to regulate the heat malfunctioned. It was a close call but they stopped it from releasing the radioactive waste into the nearby area.

    Hostage Crisis

    The Iran Hostage Crisis was during Jimmy Carter's Presidency. It was a 444 long hostage takeover of a US embassy in Iran. It was in retaliation to the US harboring there leader who they had tried to overthrow before he fled.
  • Supply-Side Economics

    Supply side economics, or trickle down economics, is when the government gives tax breaks to the rich and expect the rich to then give tax breaks to the poor. Reagan and many other republicans have tried this.
  • Star Wars

    The Strategic Defense Initiative also known as Star Wars was a concept proposed by President Reagan. It was a speech in which he said if Russia attacks the US with nuclear weapons then we will use a satilette to knock them out of the sky then fire our nuclear weapons on them.

    Noriega was the military dictator of Panama from 1983 to 1989. He was overthrow by the United States and put in prison.
  • Glasnost

    Glasnost is when the government goes from more strict media to more free media. The government allows for more critasisms and does not regulate the media as much as the used to.
  • Perestrokia

    Perestrokia is when the government turns the economics from more strict to much more free. Its most associated with going froma Soviet controlled economy to a more free market.
  • Challenger Explosion

    In late June the US launched the Challenger, a rocket meant to go to the moon. But that did not happen. It exploded just after taking off. President Kennedy led the country and conforted the people after the accident.
  • Oklahoma City Bombing

    Two extremists bombed the Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building killing 168 people. This was an act of domestic terrorism against the US.
  • The Patriot Act

    The Patriot Act was past after the 9/11 attacks on the World Trade Center buildings. President Bush passed the act in order to find terrorists by keeping survellience on the public.
