1607 Jamestown
English men arrived in North America to start a settlement. The settlement happened because of the Virginia Company Settlers. -
1609 Santa Fe, New Mexico founded by Spanish
Moved the Capital to present day Santa Fe. The reason for this was because Spain wanted to support the Santa Fe decision. Their decision was to convert Indians to Catholicism and so that they could prevent other European powers to come to the region, and to get the existing ones out. -
1619 Slavery begins in Virginia
In 1619 there were about 20-30 Africans who landed in Fort Monroe Hampton, Virginia. They came over in the English privateer white ship White Lion. -
1623 Dover, New Hampshire
Dover was being settled by the United States around this time. Dover is the oldest settlement in New Hampshire. It is also one of the 4 original townships. -
1624 Fort Amsterdam (New York City)
It was settled on the strategic southern tip of the island Manhattan. It was meant to defend the fur trade operations. It also protected the New Netherlands colony around the Hudson River. -
1632 Province of Maryland founded
King Charles l granted a charter so that they could begin a colony in the Chesapeake next to Virginia. This was granted to his son, Cecilius Calvert. -
1637 Pequot War
An attack that happened which left 500 adults and children of the Pequot tribe dead. They also called it the "Pequot Massacre" or even the "Mystic Massacre." -
1638 New Sweden
This began with the New Sweden settlers beginning a peaceful trade between other tribes that were close by. Everything was stopped though in 1638. the reason for this was because Peter Minuit died in a hurricane as they were trying to get back to Sweden. -
1642 Slavery begins in Maryland
First known slaved servants of African background arrived in Maryland. As 13 slaves arrived at St. Mary's City. -
1655 Peach Tree War
There was an attack on September 15, which led to this. The Indians and other allied tribes went to war. Led to settlements along the North River.
