Magna Carta
A document that King John of Englasn was forced to sign that was a written promise between him snf his subjects. -
Virginia House of Burgesses
The first representative government of North America. The house consisted of 22 members and 15 representatives. -
Mayflower Compact
The signers promised to keep any laws and regulations that would later be established. -
English Bill of Rights
The main purpose was to grant people the basic human rights for freedom of speech, the right to bear arms for defense and be granted the right to a demcratic process. -
French and Indian War
The French and Indian War was a struggle over who would control the Ohio River frontier in The New World. The British won and closed the Ohio Valley. -
Stamp Act
This act reequired Americans to buy special watermarked paper for newspapers and all legal documents. -
Boston Tea Party
When the colonists threw tea into the Boston Harbour as a direct action against the British government and East India Company. -
Lexington and Concord
The cause was the oppressive British rule of the Amerca colonies and the Boston Tea Party. These were the first two battles of the American Revolution. -
Second Continental Congress
Was instrumental in setting the tone and managing the efforts that would bring the birth of a new nation. -
Declaration of Independence
Stated all men are created equal and that there are certain rights that government should never violate. -
Shays's Rebelion
An uprising by Daniel Shays against the harsh treatment of debtors by the court. -
Connecticut Compromise
A compromise adopted at the Constituional Covention providing states with equal representation in the Senate. -
Virginia Plan
A plan proposed at the Constitutional Convention that provided a legislature of two houses with proportional representers. -
New Jersey Plan
A request for equal representation of the states. It was an opposition to the Viriginia Plan. -
3/5 Compromise
Stated that all slaves would count as 3/5 of a person in terms of taxation and representation. -
Constitutional Convention
The convention in Philadelphia of represntatives from each of the old colonies, excluding Rhode Island. -
The Bill of Rights
The Bill of Rights consists of the first ten amendments which was designed to calm the opponents of the Constitution in its original form. -
Rhode Island Ratifies
Rhode Island was the 13th state to be ratified. The ratification was lengthy and listed all the bill of rights and several amendments. -
Commerce Slave Trade Compromise
Protecting the interests oof slaveholders by forbidding Congress the power to tax exports from any other state, and the power to act on the slave trade.
