Sinking of USS Maine
It was assumed that the Spanish blew up the USS Maine that we sent to Cuba to show force. It was the event that caused the declaration of war between Spain and the U.S. -
Spanish American War
Spain had control of Cuba, and the Cuban nationalists were tired of being treated unfairly by the Spanish. The United States wanted to intervene because we had sugar plantations in Cuba that we wanted to protect. We sent the USS Maine to Cuba to show force, and it exploded. The Spanish were blamed and so war was declared. The US won and gained the territories of Puerto Rico, Guam, and the Phillipines. This impacted our foreign policies because we gained new territories and now have more power. -
Acquisition of Hawaii
The United States overthrew Hawaii's queen in 1893 and then annexed it in 1898. We soon had a governer, Sanford Dole and sugar and pineapple plantations were created by US settlers. Hawaii became a state in 1959. We now had a lot more land and economic opportunities in other parts of the world. -
Acquisition of Guam and the Phillippines
America gained the lands of Guam and the Phillippines after we won the Spanish American War against spain in Cuba. This affected our foreign policies because now we had more land and more power in every area of the world at this time, we had moer influence. -
Open Door Policy
The Open Door Policy sgave equal trading rights to all foreign nations in China. This gave the US an advantage because we could now open new markets to be profitted from. -
Roosevelt Corralary
The Roosevelt Corrallary was additions to the Monroe Doctrine which was added by Theodore Roosevelt. It stated that if European nations tried to colonize or interfere in North or South America it would be seen as aggression. It also banned European nations from using force to collect debts in Latin America, the US said we'd collect the debt for them, which made the US an "international police power", and we gained influence over them. -
Dollar Diplomacy
The Dollar Diplomacy was created by Howard Taft and it encouraged the US to give loans to Carribean countries. This would give the US a reason to go into their countries if they didnt pay their debts and the US had more influence over them. -
Assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand
Franz Ferdinand was assassinated by Gavrilo Princip. This lead to WWI because of European Alliances. This assassination lead to a chain of events, and because of alliances, it created a division of powers. -
Start of WWI
The assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand was the offical start of WWI and countries began seeking allies which divided the world and the world was very tense and so war began being declared. -
The Panama Canal
The Panama Canal was made to reduce travel time betweeen the East and West. The US bought had to support a revolution to gain the 10 mile strip of land. We still to this day use the Panaa Canal as a trading and transportation route. -
German Proclamation
Germany declared the water around the British Isles and offical war zone. Any ships they saw they would sink automatically. Theyy would use U boats or submarines. -
SInking of the Lusitania
Germany torpedoed a British passenger ship and killed more than 120 Americans. This was one of the causes of the US joining WWI, innocent americans were killed. -
Sussex Pledge
The Sussex Pledge was Germany saying they would no longer sink any more merchant ships without warning. They were trying to avoid the US joining the war at this time. -
Zimmerman Telegram
The British intelligence got ahold of a telegegraph being sent to Mexico by Germany asking them to hep them fight America. If they won, Mexico was promised Texas, New Mexico, and Arizona. -
US enter WWI
The US decides to enter WWI because of two events. First, the sinking of the Lusitania was the first reason for the US to get involved. The second reason was the Zimmerman telegram. After these two events, the US decided it was best to join the war and protect the country. -
Selective Service Act
This act gave the United States the right to do a draft for wars. It required all men age 21 to 31 to reigster for military service, needed or not. -
Espionage Act
The Espioanage act was the governments way of controlling speech. It stated that it was illegal to interfere with the war and help the countries enemies. They were trying to stop spies.
