The first local jail was built. -
1930’s
The Bureau operated 14 facilities for over 13,000 inmates. The USP Lewisburg opened, it was the first penitentiary built by the new agency. -
1980’s
The number of federal inmates had significant increase. The number of prisons increased as well, by the end of the decade there were 62. -
1990’s
By the end of the century, the Bureau was operating in 95 institutions. -
2018
Between 2014 and 2018 there was the first decrease in the number of inmates. Some legislative changes contributed to the decline, such as the First Step Act of 2018.
