  • Joliet CC

    Joliet HS in Illinois added 5th and 6th years to their curriculum, therefore creating the first community college.

  • Phoenix College

    Phoenix College is founded as the oldest community college in the Maricopa County, which later will add 9 more colleges to its system.

  • Great Depression

    During the Great Depression in the 1930s, community colleges became more common throughout the country as re-educating the unemployed was necessary.

  • Baby Boomers

    During the 1960s, the baby boomer generation quickly doubled the community college enrollment.

  • SCC

    Scottsdale Community College was founded on the Salt River Pima Maricopa Indian Reservation.

  • 1970s

    During the 1970s, community college enrollment doubles again to 4.3 mill. by 1980.

  • 1980s

    During the 1980s and 1990s, community college enrollment growth slows down, reaching 5.3 mill. by the end of the century.

  • Early Century

    In 2000-2001 academic year, U.S. had total of 1,076 community colleges.
