First Flight
Dwight D. Eisenhower santion the first flighd of the U-2 spy plane over Moscow and Leningrad. The flight was a succes and for the next two years at least 90% of hard intelligence of the Soviet Union was coming from the U-2 plane. With this information Dwight Eisenhower knew that Nikita Khrushchev was lying about the number of bomber and missiles being build by the Soviet Union. -
Truth Comes Out
On this day the Soviet Union shoots down Lockheed U-2 spy plane and takes the pilot, Gary Powers, hostage. Six days later Nikita Khrushchev announces that he wants an official apology from the United States for spying but Eisenhower denies any intelligence of the actions of the CIA but he claimed that the United Sates had a right to know about their Soviet Union Military strenght. -
Still No End
Nikita Khrushchev still demanded an apology but Eisenhower still said "no" and Nikita Khrushchev never showed up to the meeting in Paris where the end of the Cold War could of took place. -

Near the end of his presidency Dwight D. Eisenhower schechuled a meeting with Nikita Khrushchev to end the Cold War, on this date. -
Nevertheless
Gary Powers was eventually returned in exchange for a high-ranking Soviet Spy who was arrested by Americans.
