  • Alexander Graham Bell invents the telephone

    Created the first practical telephone, designed using a water microphone in Highland Park. He made it work by directing sound through a receiver and onto a thin membrane stretched over a drum. The first telephone was created so they could recreate a telegraph transmitter.
  • Chinese Exclusion Act

    immigration law passed that prevented Chinese laborers from immigrating to the United States. It was the first immigration law that excluded an entire ethnic group. President Chester A. Arthur signed the federal law.
  • Ellis island opens

    as three large ships wait to land. 700 immigrants passed through Ellis island that day, and 450,000 followed over that year. It mainly opened to be a immigration station.
