Lisbon Earthquake 1755

Nov 1, 1755

An earthquake with a magnitude of 9.0M. About 20,000 people died in this earthquake. It struck on the catholic holiday of All Saint's Day. Fire broke out afterwards and went on for five days. Shock waves after the earthquake hit were felt as far as Finland and North Africa.

Krakatoa Eruption

Aug 26, 1883

This eruption had a VI of 7. This eruption created a tsunami that killed over 36,000 people. The morning of the 27th, explosions were heard from as far as Perth, Australia. The explosion was ten times more explosive than Mount Saint Helen's explosion.

Aleutian Earthquake

Apr 1, 1946

This earthquake had a magnitude of 8.1M and killed around 160 people. A big tsunami struck five hours after the earthquake. The tsunami caused around $300,000,000 in damages. Most of the damage was in the city of Hilo.

Great Chilean Earthquake

May 23, 1960

This was an earthquake with a magnitude of 9.5M. It had 61 deaths in total. This earthquake caused extensive damage due to the tsunamis it created. Many cities had half the buildings rendered inhabitable. The tsunamis caused millions of dollars in damages.

Good Friday Earthquake

Mar 23, 1964

This earthquake has a magnitude of 9.2M. This had an estimated 130 deaths. The earthquake rupture started around 25km beneath the surface. The earthquake lasted 4.5 minutes. This was the most powerful earthquake in U.S history.

Hokkaido Earthquake

Jul 12, 1993

This was an earthquake with a magnitude of 7.8M. It had an estimated 120 deaths. More than half of the deaths were because of the tsunami formed after. A total of 558 houses were destroyed. About $600,000,000 in property losses were caused by the tsunami.

Papua New Guinea Earthquake

Jul 17, 1998

This earthquake had a magnitude of 7.1M. This had a death toll over 2100. This was followed after around 20-25 minutes with a tsunami. Each wave of the tsunami was estimated 4m high. Unusual sound effects and lightning followed the earthquake.

Sumatra Earthquake

Dec 26, 2004

This earthquake had a magnitude of 9.1M, and around 230,000 deaths. It estimated around $10,000,000 in damages and $2,000,000 in injuries.

Chile Earthquake

Feb 27, 2010

This had a magnitude of 8.8M and around 700 deaths. The earthquake went as far as Brazil and Buenos Aires. It weakened the coasts of California, Japan, and New Zealand.

Tokoku Earthquake

Mar 11, 2011

This earthquake had a magnitude of 9.1M. It had around 720,000 deaths. More than 12,000 buildings were destroyed. Around 150,000 evacuees lost their homes. The total economic cost from this was $235,000,000,000.

This earthquake had a magnitude of 7.4M. It had around 1374 deaths. Sulawesi is the 11th largest island in the world. It struck the island when around 330,000 residents.
