The Lisbon Earthquake had a magnitude of 9.0 and had a final death toll of 70,000 people. This earthquake occurred on all saints day in the town of lisbon. The earthquake lasted 3 and a half to 6 minutes and caused tears over 5 meters wide throughout the whole city. -

The Krakatoa Eruption was a massive volcano eruption with a magnitude of 6VEI and a death toll of 36,000. The pressure wave radiated out from Krakatoa at 675 mph. This Earthquake occurred on May 23 1960 in Chile, and reached a magnitude of 9.5. The tsunami that struck the coast of southern Chile destroyed seaside farms, killing numerous livestock and people. In the coastal village Collileufu (La Araucanía Region), native Lafkenches carried out a human sacrifice during the days following the main earthquake. -

The Aleutian Earthquake originating from Alaska had a magnitude of 7.4 with a death toll of 160 people.Wave heights reached an estimated 115 feet in Alaska, and averaged 30 feet in Hawaii, where the tsunami struck without warning nearly 5 hours after the earthquake. -

Occuring on March 27th 1964 and lasting four minutes and thirty-eight seconds, the magnitude 9.2 megathrust earthquake remains the most powerful earthquake recorded in North American history. Only 9 died due to the earthquake but 122 died due to the tsunami following this quake. -
Hokkaido Earthquake - Japan
This earthquake had a magnitude of 8.6 with a death toll of 130 people. A tsunami warning was given 5 minutes after the earthquake by the JMA. However, this was too late for the inhabitants of Okushiri.The quake caused fires to start in the town of Okushiri, adding greatly to the total damage. -
Papua New Guinea Earthquake - (Papua New Guinea)
This was an earthquake with a magnitude of 7 and a total death toll of 2,100.Scientists from the University of Papua New Guinea initiated a public awareness program for the residents of the coastal area affected by the tsunami, concluded that the geology of the surrounding area causes the destructive waves making it a very dangerous place to live.The scientists also recommended that the Papua New Guinea government improve the escape routes for the villages and improve the tsunami warning system. -
Sumatra Earthquake - (Indonesia)
This earthquake hit with a magnitude of 9.1 and killed 230,000 people. The earthquake was the third-largest ever recorded, the largest in the 21st century and had the longest duration of faulting ever observed. The energy released on the Earth's surface by the 2004 Indian Ocean earthquake was estimated at 1.1×1017 joules (110 PJ; 26 Mt). This energy is equivalent to over 1,500 times that of the Hiroshima atomic bomb. -
Samoa Earthquake - (Samoan Islands)
The earthquake hit with a magnitude of 8.1 death toll of 200. U.S. President Barack Obama declared a major disaster in American Samoa, allowing federal funds to be used for rescues, life support, and public health and safety measures. The main impact in Tonga was in the northern part of the island kingdom where there were deaths, injuries and extensive damage on Niuatoputapu, a flat coral island 500 km north of the main island Tongatapu, and reportedly closest to the epicentre of the earthquake. -

The World Bank's estimated economic cost was US$235 billion, making it the costliest natural disaster in history. -
Sulawesi Earthquake - (Indonesia)
This earthquake had a magnitude of 7.5 and a death toll of 4,340. Palu's Mutiara SIS Al-Jufrie Airport was forced to close as large cracks, one of which was 500 meters long, had been formed on the runway. More than 70,000 houses are reported to be damaged, forcing tens of thousands of people to live in shelters and tents. In Palu, the capital of Central Sulawesi, 1 mosque and a major section of the Antapura Hospital collapsed.
