Peleus, a mortal was first married to Antigone before he accidentally killed her father. After Peleus went into exile and Antigone killed herself, he met Thetis, a sea nymph. In the wedding of Peleus and Thetis, mortals and every god was invited except for Discord. As revenge, she threw a golden apple to the wedding for "the fairest" over which Zeus (who planned the wedding as well) could not choose who to give it to -

Becasue Zeus wouldn't choose who to give the golden apple to from the wedding the Pelius and Thetism so a contest was made (judged by the god Paris) for the three most beautiful goddesses in order to determine who gets the apple. Instead of being fair, Paris insetad took into account bribes from the goddesses. -
