TARAPOTO
Tarapoto is a city in the north-east of Peru, located at an altitude of 250 meters above sea level on the banks of the Shilcayo River. It is one of the main tourist and commercial cities of the Peruvian Amazon. At the moment it has a population of almost 150,000 (2012) inhabitants, reason why it is the most populated city of the department of San Martin. It is known as the City of Palm Trees. -

DISCOVERY AND CONQUEST
It began with the entry of the Spanish in 1537, by the north of our region. It was Hernando de Alvarado, who managed to dominate the natives of the area. From that brutal and heroic stage the oral tradition that refers to the remote origin of our city has been preserved. -
COLONIZATION
In the year 1739, the Viceroyalty of New Granada was created and its audience was Quito. Jaén de Bracamoros, Maynas, Quijos, Sucumbios and Canelos joined this audience.
Our city was under the jurisdiction of the Quito audience for 63 years until the King of Spain, Carlos IV, ordered the return of the ceded territories. Tarapoto together with Lamas and Moyobamba served as a center of colonizing, religious, administrative and cultural irradiation of that time. -
TARAPOTO FOUNDATION
It was founded on August 20, 1782 by the Spanish bishop Baltasar Jaime Martínez Compañón. Its beginnings date from the Pocras and Hanan Chancas were conquered by the Inca Empire and led a revolution, settling in the valleys of the Mayo and Cumbaza rivers, forming the city of Lamas. In the Suchiche Lagoon abounded the palm tree named Taraputus, a name that the bishop would use to found the city of Tarapoto. Since September 14, 1906. -

Since September 14, 1906, the city forms part of the department of San Martín. -
DEVELOPMENTE
The city is characterized by being very commercial, it concentrates on products such as coffee, cocoa, rice, tobacco, banana, papaya, sacha inchi, biodiesel oil, natural medicine products, among others. It has the following services: Financial entities and markets of supply in addition, the planning of educational actions, are the responsibility of the Local Education Management Unit of San Martín (UGEL). The educational system has four levels: initial, primary, secondary and higher. -
NOWADAYS
Tarapoto locates the highest urban population concentration in the San Martín region (28.57%).
It communicates with all its districts and population centers through several routes, mostly dependent on the Longitudinal de la Selva Norte highway. It can also be reached by Yurimaguas, and is connected by air through the Cadete FAP Guillermo del Castillo Paredes airport. It has water and sewer service, public and private electricity supply and telephone service.
