The coral reef ecosystem is home to many different sea animals. Some abiotic factors include the temperature in the ocean which was perfect for the sea creatures that live inside it. The sea otters normally get their food around these parts. Sea urchins are sea otters' food source, and they get their energy from kelp. The abiotic factor that helps kelp survive would be the sun. -
Burning of Fossil Fuels
The burning of fossil fuels has released an abundance of carbon dioxide into the ocean. This has caused a decrease in pH levels in the ocean. This is due to human activity since people have relied on cars that release gas. -
Increased Carbon Dioxide
The increase in carbon dioxide over the years has caused a decrease in kelp. This directly affects the sea urchins which are sea otters' source of energy. This is a decline for the sea otter population as they are losing their food source. -
Dissolved Carbon Dioxide decreased pH of the ocean causing acidification
The acidification in the ocean was rising since the pH levels were decreasing. This was detrimental to the sea urchin population. -
Ocean acidification damaged corals and other calcifiers weakening their shells, preventing their growth, and causing them to die.
After a few years, the acidification became high which had caused the sea urchin population to drop off. Ocean acidification damaged many things in the ocean, and this also affected the sea otters. -
Coyotes in the City
The burning of fossil fuels has caused so many things to happen, especially to the ocean. The ocean has become much more acidic which is bad for the coyotes that are thirsty for water out in the hot desert. Since the coyotes might not be able to drink the acidic water, so this has made the coyotes move to the city.
