The Declaration of Independence
The Declaration of Independence (he Wakaputanga o te Rangatiratanga o Nu Tirene) was created by James Busby. This was done without the permission of the British goverment. This document stated that all sovereign power was with the chiefs and tribes. -

Treaty Event 1840
A draft version of the Treaty of Waitangi was discussed with 500 Maori and 200 Pakeha. The Maori were suspicious but Tamati Waka Nene persuaded them to sign the treat. -
