A Typical Day in the Trenches
5 a.m. - 'Stand To'
5:30 a.m. - Rum Ration
6 a.m. - 'Stand To'
7 a.m. - Breakfeast usually bacon and tea
After 8 a.m. - Clean themselvers, weapons, and trench
Noon - Dinner
After Dinner - Sleep, on man on duty per 10
5 p.m. - Tea
6 p.m. - 'Stand To '
6:30 p.m. - 'Stand Down'
6:30 through next morning - Work all night with little rest. -
Housing
The soldiers during WWI did sleep in the trenches. When they did get sleep it was in daylight, or for an hour at a time during the night. -
Weopanry
The U.S.A. used 40 different types of weapons. 10 Hand Guns, 6 Rifels, 7 machine guns, 5 shotguns,2 gernades, 2 mortart, 2 knifes, 2 bayonets, and 1 support gun. -
Meals
Soldiers could recive these items daily, 20 oz bread, 3 oz cheese, 5/8 oz tea, 4 oz jam,1/2 oz salt, 1/36 oz pepper, 1/20 oz mustard, 8 ooz fresh vegetables, 1/2 gill of rum, 20 oz tobacco MAX, 1/3 chocholate (Optional), 4 oz oatmeal instead of bread, 1 pint of porter instead of rum, 4 oz dried fruit instead jam, 4 oz butter/margine, 2 oz dried vegetables. -
Branch
Archibald Alsop was in the Army Branch as a Sergeant. And served from 1917-1919. -
U.S.A. Enters War
Congress passed a declaration of war against Germany. U.S.A. entered the war on side of France and Britain. -
After Graduation
After Archibold Alsop graduated High School he eventually enrolled into Stanford University. In June 1917 he left the University to join Yale Mobile Hospital Unit, before he was departed to France. After war he went back to Stanford and Graduated in 1920 with a degree in Mechanical Engineering. -
Location
They were located or seemed to be near treches in a base hospital. -
Weather
Archibald told his sister in notes how the weather was very rax and deep. The rain led to a soggy and muddy ground and cold winds but they had comfort, heat, and a home. He says in those times it was better off where he was. -
Making Peace
The Germans signed a peace treaty with the Bolshevik government of Russia, giving them large lands in Russia territory. -
Armistice Day
Armisitce Day is signed. And it ended some war on the Western side. -
Transportation
After he stayed on night at a rest camp Archibald and other veterans were loaded into Freight Cars. This shows how all the soldiers were transported. Seats down the side and double rows down the middle. At certain stops soldiers were able to buy bread or wine.
