First African Americans in The U.S.
In August 1619, the first African Americans arrived from a Dutch ship, so the colonists traded in food to gain the African Americans and used them for labor. This is how all of slavery began and this would also lead to the bloodiest war in American history, the Civil War. -
The Missouri Compromise
In the Missouri compromise in 1820, the U.S. created a division, at 36°30 parallel of the Louisiana purchase territory, between slave and free states. Thomas Jefferson reffered to this as a "fire bell of the night". This led to the civil war. -
The End of The Mexican War
When the Mexican War Ended in Febuary 1848 the U.S. gained a large amount of land ,and the biggest dispute was deciding whether the states would be slave states or non slave states. It expanded the division between the South and the North on the matter of slavery. This led to the Civil War. -
Fugitive Slave Act
The fugitive slave act was an issue seen in the compromise of 1850. The act would fine any federal official who didn't arrest a runway slave. This increased abolitionist movements, this led to the civil war. -
Bleeding Kansas
In 1854 the Kansas-Nebraska act made popluar sovereignty decide whether the state would be free or slave. This led to both anti-slavery and pro-slavery groups move to the two states to gain the vote. This ended up in a chaotic disaster in both groups killing the other. This led to the civil war. -
The Pottawatomie Massacre
In May 24,1856 John Brown and a few of his followers went to pottawatomie creek in Kansas and killed 5 pro-slave followers. This created a massive uprising as the Southerns began to belive all Northern anti-slave group were seeking out the pro-slavery groups death to rid of slavery. This led to the Civil War. -
Dred Scott Court Case
In 1857, Dred Scott lost his case. The case increased abolitionist movements to fight against slavery as Scott was a slave in a free state. He belived he should have his freedoom so he took the matter to court. This led to the Civil War.. -
Charles Sumner Attacked
A day after the border Ruffians ransacked Lawrence, panic occured at the U.S. senate. Preston Brooks, a man for slavery, attacked Charles Sumner with a cane striking repetitively. it extended the division as anti-slavery were balming the pro-slavery group. This led to the Civil War. -
John Brown Raids Harper's Ferry
On October 16, 1859, John Brown led a group of seventeen to the arsenal located in Harper's Ferry, Virginia. Brown's goal was to create a riot between slaves so they rise. He failed and the remaining of his followers were captured and hanged for treason.
Many Northeners saw him as great hero and martyr. While the Southeners just saw him as a terrorist. This led to the Civil war. -
Abraham Lincoln's Election
On November 6, !860, when Abraham Lincoln was elected South Carolina was the first state to secede from the U.S. Then six other Southern states followed and seceded as well. This is what ultimately led to the Civil War.
