Top Ten Craziest Space Foods

  • 1: Shrimp Cocktails

    1: Shrimp Cocktails
Yes, it may be crazy and strange, but apparently it is one of the things that doesn’t lose its taste in space. The reason is the astronauts bodily fluids (yuck) aren’t being pulled down to their feet, dulling the flavor and taste of most foods. But the shrimp cocktail didn’t lose its taste, so they used it more often. Weird! It was thought of to go to space in 1963, and they sent it!
  • Spicy Green Beans

    Spicy Green Beans
They were sent to space because of their healthy nature and they’re full of protein. They became attracted to them for the same reason as the shrimp cocktail, which I think is a little strange. They sent them with the first space journey by Americans, which was 1965.
  • Tabasco Sauce

    Tabasco Sauce
This was sent with the first American journey! This one the astronauts drink straight from the bottle! They are supposed to get a craving for this spicy stuff in their journey, and then slurp it up. It’s pretty funny how they eat it, just gulp, gulp, gulp, done. The craving can happen for two reasons: 1, after they land on the moon and get back to the ship their bodies will crave it, or 2, it is a natural occurrence that simply slaps them in the stomach and gets them to gulp it down.
  • Coke and Pepsi

    Coke and Pepsi
Coke and Pepsi were also sent to space, but the first time it didn’t go too well. The Coke exploded everywhere. Pepsi was sent a few years later in “frozen Pepsi balls” which was a frozen version they could eat. Coke was sent again later, but with pressurized cups and a dispensing machine. They decided to send these with a test ship, and then later in 1965.
  • FREEZE-DRIED ICE CREAM

    FREEZE-DRIED ICE CREAM
Okay, you might have heard of this one. It was supposed to be sent with an Apollo mission, but when the ship left, the ice cream wasn’t ready yet. However, it was NEARLY sent to space, so I think that’s close enough. It’s not cold, it’s dry as chalk, but it melts in your mouth and tastes like good old-fashioned ice cream. It was supposed to be sent because it wouldn’t float about and it was tested positive for YUM.
  • SPACE RAM SOUP????

    SPACE RAM SOUP????
This was a space version of the famous cup o’ noodles. It was developed for spaceflight and was compacted into a container made specially for astronauts. It was thought of to go to space in 1977.
  • 2: Tomato and basil seeds

    2: Tomato and basil seeds
The people at NASA decided this was a great idea in February 1978. They sent them up with the astronauts because they were lightweight, small, and easy to eat. They challenged kids all over the planet to grow the plants to get the seeds. Some of the astronauts say that space tomatoes are the best!
  • Antimatter (energy drink)

    Antimatter (energy drink)
Another crazy thing that was sent up to space was none other than an energy drink! It was sent with the astronauts because of the special blend of vitamins and minerals. If this wasn’t to your taste, they also had something called Space 20, which was space water. This was thought to go to space in 2001.
  • Canasnacks

    Canasnacks
These were actually sent with the first CANADIAN astronauts, and they were reported to be delicious. They were sandwich cookies with maple, blueberry, cranberry or raspberry filling. They were nutritional and were even designed with a maple leaf! They were sent to space because they leave almost no crumbs (sweet) and they were sent in 2007.
  • Chipotle Paste

    Chipotle Paste
This one is really wacky. It’s not the Chipotle restaurant that Liza Koshy seems to be addicted to, it’s like the actual chipotle, which is a hot pepper. It’s supposed to be extremely spicy, but it’s great because astronauts apparently get a giant craving for spicy stuff. It will be sent in the spring/summer of 2017. The closest answer is June-July.
