Colombus first discovers America
Colombus came to North America and claimed the land in Spain's name. He brought Spanish settlers. He was trying to find a route to Asia, but got lost. -
Jamestown is founded
Jamestown was the first successful settlement. It was named for their king. It was settled on a small, defensible peninsula. -
Pilgrims settle in Plymouth
It was the second permanent English colony. It was founded by a one congregation of Seperatists, known today, as Pilgrims. They sailed to America on the Mayflower Compact. -
Stamp Act
Imposed taxes on documents and printed papers. I stamp was placed on itmes to show that the tax was payed. It was the first tax that affected the colonists directly -
Boston Tea Party
Lord North devised the Tea Act to save the new bankrupt British East India Company. This allowed the company to sell tea to the colonies with out taxes. Boston rebels disguied themselves as Native Americans and dumped 18,000lbs of the companies tea into the water -
Colonies declare independence
Richard Henry Lee moved that "theses United colonies are, and of a right ought to be, free independent states." They started to write the declaration of Independence. They declared freedom from Britain. -
Constitution is ratified
American colonist adopted the Declaration of Independence. This seperated th ecolonists from Britain. It started the war for Independence. -
Louisiana Purchase
It doubles the size of the U.S. It was sold for 15million dollars, double the size of the U.S. It was very cheap at the time. -
Civil War ends
It was one of the earliest ture industrial wars. The confederates surrender on April 3rd. -
Lincoln Assassinated
Abraham Lincoln was the first president to be assassinated. Lincoln was shot while watching the play Our American Cousin with his wife Mary Todd Lincoln at Ford's Theatre in Washington, D.C. This is important since it was part of a larger conspiracy in a bid to revive the Confederate cause. Booth's co-conspirators were Lewis Powell and David Herold, who were assigned to kill Secretary of State William H. Seward, and George Atzerodtwho was to kill Vice President Andrew Johnson.
