Rosa Parks, an African-American woman, refused to yield her seat to a white man on a Montgomery bus. She was arrested and fined. The boycott of public busses by blacks in Montgomery began on the day of Parks' court hearing and lasted 381 days. -

Evers was assassinated by Byron De La Beckwith, a member of the WhiteCitizens' Council, a group formed in 1954 to resist integration of schools and Civil Right activity. Evers' murder and the resulting trials inspired civil rights protesters, as well as numerous works of art, music, & film. -
