The Hunt For Red October
This was the first book that Tom Clancy released and truly showed him as an unexperienced writer. His lack of details forces him to write prequels to this book to fill in all the holes in the main charcter's back story. This book is the third in the sereies while the second was not written until 2002. This shows some clear orginizational issues! Just as in Patriot Games he shows lack of focus when using imagery and a lack of details surrounding the main charachter. -
The Hunt For Red October
All mistakes made here are remade in Patriot Games. The mistakes are carbon copies of one another and it seems Clancy has not learned much yet. -
Period: to
Timespan
Time elapsed between releases of Patriot Games and Rainbow Six.
Tom Clancy being the ecentric man that he was did not write the books in chronilogical order. Red Rabbit (Book 2) was written in 2002, while The Hunt For Red October (Book 3) was written in 1984 -
Patriot Games
This is the first book in the Jack Ryan series, it was one of Clancy's earliest novels. I read it for quarter one and after hearing some hype for the book I was honestly disappointed in it. I found it to be rather boring, with very crucial details lacking. There were long dialogue segments with no apparent connection to the story. There were also long periods of time in which there was little to no action, making the book drag on. Even though this wasn't, in my opinion, the greatest of books. -

... imagery. Clancy spends paragraphs paint out a beautiful picture of the little, mostly irrelevant details, but fails to fully color the bigger picture. Long sections of irrelevant dialogue coupled with a lack of action makes the novel drag on. It was for these reasons that I found the book to be unejoyable, and it was these traits that truly marked Clancy as a young and unexperienced writer. -
Patriot Games Continued
Clancy lacked details involving characterization, overused dialogue, and was unfocused when using imagery. He left out many details concerning the appearance of the main character Jack Ryan. Some argue this is so the reader can imagine Jack Ryan as they please without too many constraints. Although some find this a great way to interact with the reader, I personally found it confusing. Not knowing what the main character looked like being a major plot hole. He was also very unfocused when... -

... career, he is still digging himself out of the mess that is Jack Ryan. While simultaneously realizing his mistakes. This book has a great balance between dialogue and action. With both the little, and big pictures being clearly painted. This number one New York Time's best seller is completely worth its acclaim -
Rainbow Six
This novel is not part of the Jack Ryan series, but is of something new entirely. It follows a crack squadron of anti-terrorism commando's from all over NATO. This books represents two separate, but equally important events. First, this book is by far my favorite out of all the Tom Clancy books I have read this year. The reason it is my favorite is because of the second event it represents. The second event is the tipping point in Clancy's career, he is still digging himself out of the mess... -
Red Rabbit
This is the second book chronologically in the Jack Ryan series, but it was written 18 years after the third book! Besides the organizational issues that Clancy has this book did not suffer as poorly as his early works. Just as with Rainbow Six Clancy has appeared to learn from his past mistakes. He has added more action, made the dialogue more relevant, and learned to fully paint the bigger picture. It truthfully shows how much Clancy... grown as a writer. He has learned to fill in many of the -

... has grown as a writer. He has learned to fill in many of the holes that he originally created for his readers. Although may critcized the book in the begging it was eventually accepted as a very well writen book with a great plot folloing a Russian defector and a plot to kill the pope. This book is one that comes towards the middle of Clancy's carrer and did not fall victim to mistakes like earlier novels.
