~may stand with small support
~can stand alone for a little bit without support

16-18 Months: Physical

-walk sideways
-walks fast and runs stiffly
-squats down smoothly from standing position
-jumps with both feet
-pushes and pulls large toys around the floor

-likes to grab anything and everything
-adds hand gestures to spoken language
-may turn knobs of radio and tv -
16-18 Months: Cognitive
-remembers where objects belong
-begins to figure things out through thought process
-scribbles more freely but can still imitate strokes in drawing
-can identify simple drawings in a book, such as "ball" or "doggie"
~Language
-vocabulary goes up to six to ten words
-uses words instead of gestures to express some wants, such as up or cookie
-may use two-word phrases
-identifies objects by pointing when requested
-refers to self by name when asked
-says "no" more often than any other word -
19-21 Months: Physical
-walks backwards and sideways
-runs without falling often
-walks up annd down stairs with help
-loves to run, jump, and climb
-hangs from bar, grasping with hands
-sits on floor from standing position quite easily
~Small Motor Skills:
-holds two objects in hand easily
-holds container in one hand, puts small objects into it with other hand, then dumps the object out
-uses one hand more than the other -
19-21 Months: Cognitive
-progresses from simple imitation to imaginative play
-can remember familiar objects without seeing them
-places circlesm triangles, and squares in form board
-interested in small objects like bugs
-looking at books for longer periods of time
-learns to distinguish different sounds and smells
~Language:
-has vocabulary of about 20 words
-responds to speech with speech
-constantly asks "whats that?"
-enjoys hearing nursery rhymes
-matches sounds to the animals that make them -
22-24: Cognitive
-becomes interested in the outcome of activities rather than just the activities themselves
-becomes interested in the precise placement of objects
-is curious about objects in environment;feels, squeeszes, pulls and pushes objects
-may be able to recall what is lost and where it ight be
-recognizes when pictures in book is upside down
~Languages
-has vocabulary of 50 or more words
is able to ask for things using simple words

22-24 Months: Physical
~Large Motor Skills:
-likes to walk on low walls and perform other stunts
-bounces and sways in simple dancing movements
-can seat self in smalls chair with ease
-lacks ability to start efficiently or stop quickly while running
-throws ball overheard instead of tossing
~Small Motor Skills
-shows increaded coordination and smoother hand and finger movements
-can open screw-type closures
-holds crayon with thumb and fingers
-snips paper with scissors -
24-30 Months: Cognitive
-becomes increasingly interested in children's TV shows
-understands cause and effect in terms of own behavior
-is better able to plan a play activity and carry it out
-enjoys playing house and imitatingfamily situations
-can follow two-step commands
~Language
-vocabulalary starts at 200 words and increases to 500 or more in this period
-refers to self by nane; then learns to use pronouns
-uses words to make requests -
24-30 Months: Physical
~Large Motor Skills
-improves motor skills as torso lengthens and baby fat begins to disappear
-kicks ball forward
-climbs on jungle gym with fair amount of ease
-climbs everywhere indoors, even in forbidden places
-enjoys running but is unable to measure sudden stops. May collide with other people or obstacles
~Small Motor Skills
-opens doors by turning knobs
-can carefully turn pages of book one page at a time
-likes to take jar lids off and screw them back on -
30-36 Months: Physical
~Large Motor Skills
-likes to be in constant motion, running or walking sideways or backwards
-enjoys games involving running
-climbs up slide ladder and slides down
-walks on tiptoes
~Small Motor Skills
-turns doorknobs with greater strength
-scribbles and draws circles as well as horizontal and vertical lines
-eats with fork
-takes objects apart and puts them back together
-strings large beads -
30-36 Months: Cognitive
-begins to classify objects into general categories
-uses symbolic represntation in make-believe play
-tries out various roles in make-believe play
-can remember and follw three-step commands
-recognizes self in photographs
-can stack rings in the correct order

-vocabulary starts at about 500 words and increases to 900 or 1000
-starts to use past tense and plurals
-uses personal pronouns correctly
-understands relative size(big and small)
