    During *ANTIQUITY, the region around Vietnam had many ethnicities, few languages, and two key religious beliefs. Some ethnicities were *AUSTRO-ASIATIC and *VIETIC. These ethnicities spoke different dialects of today's Asian languages such as Chinese and Vietnamese. Each ethnic group had its own local beliefs that incorporated *SHAMANISM (the belief that few persons’ can communicate with spirits/ancestors for guidance) and *ANCESTOR WORSHIP.(the belief that ancestors watch over and protect them)

    In 111 B.C.E *CHINA conquered Vietnam, introducing advanced *CIVILIZATION as well as Chinese customs which impacted the countries and religions and language. The Chinese brought the teachings of *CONFUCIANISM (religion of Confucius) and *TAOISM(religion of Lao Tzu) to the Vietnamese which led most of the population to convert to either religion. As the Chinese established more and more institutions, more and more people started speaking Chinese and are still speaking Chinese to this day.

    The *FRENCH invaded Vietnam in 1858, in hopes to “civilize” the country, this impacted their religions and languages. The French set up schools to civilize as well as colonize the country. They introduced *CHRISTIANITY(religion of Jesus) and tried to convert all the Vietnamese. This worked and now Christianity is one of the most practiced religions in Vietnam. They also taught French, which later stuck because now there are multiple French letters in the Vietnamese alphabet.

    Today Vietnam has many Asian ethnicities, one official language, and two main religions. 85% of the population’s ethnicity is *KINH (Viet) making it the main ethnicity of Vietnam. The rest of the country is made up of smaller ethnicities such as *HMONG(people from mountain villages throughout Southeast Asia) and *THAI. Vietnam’s official language is *VIETNAMESE. Although 73% of the Vietnamese population is non-religious, the part that is is 13% *CHRISTIANITY and 14% *BUDDHISM.
