Dill leaves them early September to return to Meridian. They saw him leave on the five o'clock bus. Scout was miserable without him and she realized she was starting school in a week. -
Scout meets MIss.Caroline
Scout prepares to go to school for the first time. Once she is finally at school, she finds that her teacher, Miss Caroline Fisher, deals poorly with children. -
Miss. Caroline finds out about Scout
Miss. Caroline finds out that Atticus teaches Scout how to read. She becomes very displeased and makes Scout feel guilty for being educated. Scout goes and complains to Jem but Jem says that Miss. Caroline is just trying new methods of teaching. -
Walter Cunningham
Scout introduces the reader Walter Cunningham. Walter Cunningham is a very poor little boy that is from a really big family that got hit hard by the Great Depression. -
Miss.Caroline try’s to give Walter money.
Miss Caroline offers him a quarter to buy lunch, telling him that he can pay her back tomorrow. Walter’s family is large and poor, so poor that they pay Atticus with hickory nuts, turnip greens, or other goods when they need legal help.
