Charles "Dill" Baker Harris comes to Maycomb to live with his Aunt Rachel for the summer. Dill is almost 7 and Scout is almost 6, while Jem is almost 10 -
Jem Loses, and Reclaims His Pants
Scout, Jem, and Dill sneak over to the Radley House to peek through the shutter. While creeping around the house they hear a gun go off behind them, so they jump over the fence, but Jem loses his pants. Later that night he goes back to retrieve them and finds them mended and folded. -
Soap Carvings
Scout and Jem find soap carvings in the tree of a boy and a girl resembling themselves. They realize that Boo has been watching them. -
Miss Maudie's House Burns Down
When Miss Maudie's house burns down, Atticus wakes up Scout and brings her outside. While Scout is watching neighbors save furniture, she feels a blanket draped over her. When she turns around to see who it was, she sees nobody. Scout realizes it was Boo Radley. -
Atticus Agrees to Defend Tom Robinson
Atticus agrees to defend Tom Robinson, a black man accused of raping Mayella Ewell, daughter of Bob Ewell. The Ewell's are barely above black people in social status, and Bob is a racist. -
Mrs. Dubose's Flowers
Mrs. Dubose yells choice words at Jem when he is walking by, and he gets so mad, that he cuts her flowers. Jem is forced to read to Mrs. Dubose for 2 months. 2 months later, Mrs. Dubose dies. She was addicted to morphine and having Jem read to her helped her quit. -
The Trial
Everyone from the town but Miss Maudie show up to the trial. Scout, Jem, and Dill sit in the balcony with Reverend Sykes. Atticus does everything in his power to prove that Tom is innocent. After much deliberation, the jury rules that Tom is guilty. -
Tom Robinson Shot
Tom tried escaping prison, but failed and was shot 17 times. -
Bob Ewell Dead
When walking home from the Halloween pageant, Scout and Jem are followed. they start to run and Scout falls. A knife pierces her costume and gets caught on a wire. She gets pulled away and there is a struggle. She feels for Jem, but instead feels an unshaved man smelling of whiskey. She goes home and sees a man carrying Jem. When she gets home she finds that Boo saved Jem and Scout, and killed Bob Ewell with his own knife. Heck Tate says that Bob fell on his switchblade. -
Scout Says Goodbye
Boo says goodnight to Jem and then Scout takes Boo back to his house. Boo walks into his house, and Scout never sees him again. Scout then imagines life from his point of view, and understands why he stays inside.
