Trends in the Ocean

  • Burning of Fossil Fuels

    Burning of Fossil Fuels
Fossil fuels have existed way before humans have existed on this planet. During recent years, planet conflicts and evolution has occurred due to the burning of fossil fuels. Fossil fuels play a huge role in the challenges the earth is facing right now because it is the leading cause of carbon dioxide rising. Climate change is also developed by this because humans are constantly burning coal, gas, or oil. Levels of acidification in the ocean are increasing because of global warming.
  • Introduction: (Abiotic Factors of an Ecosystem)

Introduction: (Abiotic Factors of an Ecosystem)
Abiotic factors are one of the components that make up an ecosystem. They are the non-living factors that influence an ecosystem, along with biotic factors. Many of these elements exist in the ocean; for example, increased carbon dioxide and ocean acidification. They also play a huge role in an ecosystem and affect their ability to adapt.
  • Increased Carbon Dioxide

    Increased Carbon Dioxide
The increase in carbon dioxide is a huge conflict for the ocean as it is continuously developing. The water temperature is rising persistently because of the waves that draw in the water and sucks in the carbon dioxide. This worsens when oceanic plants take in the CO2 and spread it around.
  • Dissolved Carbon Dioxide decreased pH of the ocean causing acidification

Dissolved Carbon Dioxide decreased pH of the ocean causing acidification
The dissolved carbon dioxide decreased the pH of the ocean which caused acidification. Ocean acidification is already occurring due to absorbing excess carbon dioxide in the atmosphere and the decrease in pH is not helping. This is not beneficial for the ocean plants, nor the species living in the water.
  • Ocean acidification damaged corals and other calcifiers weakening their shells, preventing their growth, and causing them to die.

Ocean acidification damaged corals and other calcifiers weakening their shells, preventing their growth, and causing them to die.
The presence of ocean acidification is developing many conflicts in the ocean, including the cause of bleached corals. As the water becomes more acidic due to carbonic acid, it also affects their species negatively. Research has also shown that the pH level is around 8.1 which is really bad. An example of how it impacted the corals is by bleaching them.
  • Summary (Coyotes in the City)

    Summary (Coyotes in the City)
Coyotes that are coming into the city is similar to the story because they are both caused by humans. Ocean acidification is caused by humans that are continuously burning fossil fuels for resources. The coyotes are coming into the city because humans took their territory for their own greed. Humans are the cause of world problems so both stories are similar due to the same reason.
