Belly dancing was a big part of the 'dress up and play' life of every little girl, and most girls learned how to dance either from their moms or any other women in their family. The rhythm was based on the drum-based oriental music. The role in this started in Ancient Egypt. -

Medieval Period (500-1400 AD)
It was seen only as an action of moving the body. There was even a point when it was seen as one of the seven deadly sins. But then later, their perceptions changed and was very popular. Each dance was given an individual name which would seperate all the different dances there were. Dancing would be a form of expression. -

Renaissance (1200-1600 AD)
Dance was a favorite pastime at that time. Educated people were expected to know how to dance. There were simple dances likes chains or circles but there were also dances in which you needed alot of practice. Their bulky clothes made it difficult for them to move quickly. Also, many songs were written just for dancing. -

Ballet
Ballet started to emerge around the 1500s. It developed court simplistic floor patterns and poses with elaborate costumes. King Louis XIV granted permission for first ballet school. It also began to be more serious and theatrical. -

Early 1700s of Jazz
Early examples of musical theatre productions can be found in the 18th century England, France, and Germany. American musical theatre dance has its roots in jazz dance. The Black Crook was one of the first musical theatre productions. -
Beginning of Jazz
Slaves were brought to America from Africa, they brought their music and dance with them. -
Ballet 1800s
"Romantic" ballet was produced. They were characterized by their use of mythical characters and places. The plot centered on a love triangle story, dramatic action of the characters was extremely emotional and characters were both realistic/human. -

Bill 'Bo Jangles' Robinson
Died November 25, 1949. Early Vaudeville star who became a tap dance legend. Created light tap sounds by keeping his weight on the balls of his feet. (Danced with Shirley Temple) -

Harlem Renaissance
The Harlem Renaissance was a significant time period of history of jazz dance.Many exclusive clubs opened, during this time period.. also known as the Roaring Twenties as many dances were performed at these clubs, such as Charleston and Black Bottom. During the next few decades, jazz dance was a part of the theatre, nightclubs, movie,musicals, dance concerts and dance studios. -

Earl Tucker ("Snake Hips") was a performer at the Cotton Club during the days of Duke Ellington. His style of dance is boldly related that of waving that you see young Hip Hop dancers still doing today and he also had similar floats and back slides that he used in his act as well. -
Seymour Felix (Jazz)
In 1926, Seymour Felix introduced the marriage of book (script), music, lyrics, and dance as important aspect of musical theatre. From that trime on, theatre productions highlighting dance sequences were the norm and were also entusiastically recieved by the audiences. -
