    Enemy Aliens and the Home Front
    The same Act that gave women the right to vote also quietly took away the votes from Canadians who were born in an enemy country. The government also started the War Measures Act from 1914. This Act limited the freedom of civilians. This Act also allowed the police to arrest & imprison people without charging them & people born in enemy countries were deported easily without any trails. Before, French Canadian were treated unequally and struggled with the English Canadians. However, after the 22nd Battalion was formed, many French Canadian soldiers were promoted to higher ranks.     Discrimination between the Blacks and the Whites remains the same even after the heroic deeds Jones have performed, like Jones rescued his unit from an enemy at the battle of Vimy Ridge in April 1917. This battle was a success for Canada. Jones was recommended a medal but didn’t receive any because he was Black. As well many blacks people were treated unequally and disrespected them in this time period. (-1)

    Battle of the Vimy Ridge
    In 1917, Canadians attacked the Germans as one strong unit, where the 4 divisions of the Canadian Corps fought together for the first time and attacked the Ridge on April 9th, 1917. About 4000 Germans prisoners were captured. More than 10500 Canadians were killed and wounded in this assault. This battle was a huge win for Canada as they received their pride and awareness through this battle. (+1)

    French Canadians were forced to enlist in the army. Borden enacted the Military Service Act in 1917, which made the military service compulsory for all men. Many people died due to objection, as well had problems in the election. (-2)

    In 1917, when a Norwegian ship was leaving the Halifax Harbor, carrying war supplies, at the same time, a French ship was approaching carrying cargo of explosive materials. The collision was so great, about 1500 people were killed and hundreds died from the injuries the collision caused.(-2)
