    This battle was the first experience of WWI, It was a brutal first experience but Canadians successfully held their ground.This is when Canadian soldiers experienced the first gas attack in history. Canadians lost over 6000 men. This battle showed some progress because they were learning what the war is actually like, and they learned about gas attacks.

    The battle of the Somme was the biggest disaster in British history, Canadians gained a reputation as shock troops. On the first day, there were 58,000 casualties and at the end of 5 months 624,000 Entente deaths and 660,000 Alliance deaths. By the end, 400,000 Canadian men joined the war effort. This showed less progress because we lost a lot of men and only gained 11km in 5 months from the "Big Push".

    Billy Bishop was a Canadian fighter pilot, he shot down 5 enemies in a month from March 17- April 8, 1917. To the Germans, he was known as "Hell's Handmaiden". Officially credited with 72 victories making him Canada's top ace of WWI. This had good progress because he was a good threat against the Germans.

    At the beginning of the war, 350,000 Canadians volunteered for the military, in 1916 fewer men were volunteering. Prime Minister Borden and the Conservatives decided to pass the Military Service Act which conscripted, or drafted, single men between the ages of 20 and 35. Farmers, Manufacturers, and French-Canadian were opposed to conscription. This was good progress because they got more men.

    Vimy Ridge was very heavily defended by Germany, the task seemed impossible. It was to bed carried out by Canadian corps. They used a new technique called the creeping barrage. Canada had 10,602 casualties and 3,598 killed and 7,004 wounded. Vimy Ridge was a turning point in the war. This had a lot of progress and Vimy Ridge has ever since been seen as an important event in Canada gaining nationhood.

    Women ran the country while men were at war, the gained more political power. In 1917, Prime Minister Borden passed the Wartime Elections Act. This gave the vote to women who are related to men at the front. This showed great progress because it is giving women more freedom.

    Passchendaele seemed impossible because of the mud, it took 10 men to pull out one casualty so most men left to die. the attack was successful but the 7km of mud that was gained was soon won back by Germany and it cost 16,000 Canadian lives and 330,000 British casualties. So there was a decrease in progress in this battle.

    The Halifax Explosion was on December 6, 1917, at 9:04 am. It was caused by the Imo and Mont Blanc colliding. Mont Blanc was filled with explosives so when they collided it caused a huge explosion and killed 2,000 people. It was the largest manmade disaster. This decreased in progress because Halifax was a big supplier for the war.

    In 1918 Prime Minister Borden passed the Federal Women's Franchise Act which gave all women of age the right to vote. This is good progress because this is when women started gaining rights.

    At this point WWI was not going well for Germany, they had to ask for an armistice. The fighting would stop at 11 am, on November 11, 1918. Germany was to demobilize her army and had to surrender her navy to Britain. Allied troops were to occupy parts of Germany along the border of France and Belgium. This had a lot of progress because the war was over and the Triple Entente won.
