  • Missouri Compromise

    Missouri Compromise
    In 1820 the Missouri Compromise was proposed by Henry Clay. A line was drawn between the north and the south and it grew tension showing how north was against slavery and the south for slavery. The compromise let the new state Missouri to come to arise then the North and South fought for a free or slave state to give one side more of an advantage. As Missouri was made a slave state Maine became a free state. As we bought the Louisiana territory, slavery was excluded in the area.
  • Wilmot Proviso

    Wilmot Proviso
    In 1846 David Wilmot proposed the Mexican Cession area should become a free state. From Missouri being a slave state and Maine being free the playing field was level and whoever claims the Mexican Cession they would be granted the advantage of slavery or free soil. The Wilmot Proviso was a failure as the South took over the Senate but it led to the Republican Party in 1854.

    Compromise of 1850
    In 1850 The Fugitive Slave Act was amended and the slave trade was banned, but not slavery. The 5 laws of it were an admission of California as a free state, the strengthening of the Fugitive Slave Law, popular sovereignty in Utah and New Mexico concerning the question of slavery, the abolition of the slave trade in DC, and the federal assumption of Texas's debt. The Fugitive Slave Act was amended and free African Americans were being put back into slavery even if already being free or escaped.

    Fugitive Slave Act
    In 1850 As pressure from southerners to pass the Fugitive Slave Act grew they also they did as northerners were also forced into helping the south take them in or else, they would be punished. The Act was passed by Congress which allowed slave catchers and regular people to turn in runaway slaves and free slaves even with papers. Doing so slave catchers and the public would send in free men and runaways back into slavery uprising an ordeal between the north and south once again.

    Uncle Tom’s Cabin
    In 1853, Harriet Beecher Stowe wrote the book uncle toms cabin, the book showed the horrors and brutal treatments the slaves had to face. No one really realized how bad they were being treated so when it got published people realized how horrible slavery actually is. The people in the south rejected the book not wanting people to read it and saying that it wasn't true.

    Kansas Nebraska Act
    In 1854 Senator Stephen Douglas proposed the idea that divided the nation into two. It divided the land west of Missouri into two territories, and he argued for popular sovereignty to tell if it would be free or slave state. It drew a line between the north and south deciding what states are going to be free or slave and separated them which was another cause to the Civil War. Doing this it really repealed the Compromise of 1850.

    Dred Scott case
    The Dred scott case was about a slave that was brought to a free state and still practiced slavery. It took place in Illinois and was a huge debate. The owner, John Emerson, was outraged by this event. This lead both sides of slavery to be outraged.
  • Lincoln Douglas Debate

    Lincoln Douglas Debate
    In 1858 Lincoln and Douglas had separate ideas on how to run the nation and both had separate ideas for the slavery debate too. The final debate was in Illinois and it was mainly on slavery and a run for Congress which Douglas won. Douglas was sent to Congress but however Lincoln did win a seat in the Senate which will then lead him to a Presidency.

    John Browns raid
    In 1859, John brown hated slavery so he decided to attack a town called Harpers ferry with his 5 sons, his plan was for the slaves to rebel but they never did so he got caught and was sentenced to death and hung in 1859. This event made northerners more confident in their fight to end slavery and to them John Brown looked like a hero, but for the southerners he was considered a terrorist.

    In 1860 Lincoln, Douglas, John Breckinridge, and John Bell were all involved in Lincoln's election. It took place in Virginia. The 1860 election between Lincoln and almost against everyone else because he was the only one for a non-slavery cause. Lincoln actually won carrying more than any of the other candidate's votes combined. Lincoln wanted to change the way the nation was and becoming the president in the middle of a national crisis he believed he could do more work than anyone else.
  • Southern Cession

    Southern Cession
    In 1861 Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, South Carolina, and Texas all got mad because of Lincoln being in office and before Lincoln did anything they seceded from the union which they instead should have waited. The south was mad that Lincoln was elected and knew that Lincoln was gonna try to take away slavery and change things around so before he could they secede. Seceding like this was another cause to the Civil War which showed how the south was ready to split apart.
