Attack on Pearl Harbor
At 7:55 a.m., the first Japanese dive-bomber appeared over Pearl Harbor. The numerous airfields at the base were subjected to a brutal offensive. The surprise attack was over in less than two hours, and every battleship in Pearl Harbor had faced severe damage. -
Declaration of war
The American people were determined to go to war after the attack on Pearl Harbor. The Japanese wanted the United States to commit to lifting economic sanctions against them, but they drew their enemy into a global conflict that ended in Japan's first foreign occupation. Roosevelt's declaration of war on Japan was authorized by Congress on December 8th. -
World War II
Japan's allies, Germany and Italy, declared war on the United States three days later. World War II had started, and the United States rejoined the Allies. -
The Declaration by United Nations
The United Nations Declaration was approved at the Arcadia Conference in Washington, D.C. Representatives from 26 Allied countries promised to use "all available resources" until victory was secured, and to refrain from making separate peace agreements with Axis powers. -

The Executive Order
President Franklin D. Roosevelt signed Executive Order 9066 on February 19, 1942, starting a hostile World War II policy with long-term consequences for Japanese Americans. The document forced the expulsion of resident enemy aliens from areas in the West that were supposedly designated as military zones. -
