    Missouri Compromise
    The Missouri Compromise was written and signed by Henry Clay, the compromise was made to help defuse tensions on slavery but only made it worse later in time. The Missouri Compromise finalized that Missouri would become a slave state and Maine would be a free state.
  • Uncle Toms Cabin

    Uncle Toms Cabin
    In 1852 Harriet Beecher Stowe wrote Uncle Tom's Cabin. This book was about slavery and what it was really like and how awful and disgusting it was, this made some people finally realize how bad slavery was, but also made southerners very mad. This book is one of the major events leading to the civil war.
  • Wilmot Proviso

    Wilmot Proviso
    The Wilmot Proviso proposal happened in 1846. It was a proposal acquired by Mexico to ban slavery in the Territory. It took place in the Mexico territory we had gained. David Wilmot saw how bad slavery was and wanted to put an end to it Ths made them have to negotiate a treaty about slavery. The cause was Wilmot saw how bad slavery was and it lead to the effect of us needing to make a treaty.
  • Fugitive Slave Act

    Fugitive Slave Act
    The fugitive slave act of 1850 happened when Henry Clay needed to make a compromise to the slavery issue. This act required slaves to be returned to their owners if they escaped into any free or slave states. Congress noticed that slaves were escaping to free states so they didn't have to go back to their owners. This would later impact history by upsetting the north.The north now had to bring any escaped slaves or people with the dark skin that got into their free states back to the south.

    IN 1850 Henry Clay wrote the compromise of 1850 to get rid of the fugitive slave act. Congress did this to seek a compromise and avert a crisis between North and South. Although it helped slaves the south was angered.

    Steven Douglas passed the Kansas Nebraska act that allowed people to decide if their state should be a slave state or not based on popular sovereignty. this made the southerners happy but the northerners where raged so a series of violent events happened in the United States between 1854 and 1861 called bleeding kansas.
  • The Dred Scott case

    The Dred Scott case
    In 1857 a slave owner took one of his slaves (Dred Scott) to help him on his trip since he was in a free state he figured he would be a free man, but his master didn't agree so he took his case to court in Illinois. Sadly Dred lost and this made the north furious because they took it has the court trying support and expand slavery. Years later Dred finally got his freedom.
  • Lincoln Douglas Debate

    Lincoln Douglas Debate
    In 1858, there was a debate between Abraham Lincoln and Stephan Douglas on their opinions on slavery and the expansion issue. They were deciding who would get the state senate seat in Illinois. Lincoln believed slavery should not be allowed and shouldn't spread west, but Douglas believed in popular sovereignty. Douglas ended up winning the debate. As a result, it helped Lincoln become more popular and people started thinking about slavery more often in their lives.
  • John Browns Raid

    John Browns Raid
    On October 16, 1859, John Brown, a group of his supporters, and a group of slaves invaded Harpers Ferry, Virginia. John Brown had a plan to end slavery and was an angel to the North and a Devil in the south, he planned to arm slaves and fight off slavery for good. His plan ended up failing and John Brown got caught and sentenced with the death sentence.

    Lincolns election was a 4-way election contest between Lincoln, John Bell, John C. Breckenridge,and Stephan A Douglas. It took place in the U.S. This event took place because when Lincoln won over the other candidate's states started to leave. It eventually leads to Lincoln being our leader and causing the Southern secession to happen and having 7 states leave the union. The people voted for Lincoln because he was anti-slavery and the north was anti-slavery so they voted for him.
  • Southern Secession

    Southern Secession
    The southern Secession took place in 1861 when 7 states (South Carolina, Mississippi, Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, Texas Virginia, Arkansas, Tennessee, and North Carolina) left the union after the election of their new president Abraham Lincoln. This affected history by making us lose 7 states from our nation and them leaving to create the Southern Secession.
