Timeline over the English language's proliferation

  • East Indian company

    • Founded to manage trade between India and Britain. -Calcutta was the Capitol. -The local language in Calcutta is Bengali. The national is Hindi. -English was the trade language. -Some words between Indian English and British English are false twins. -A Dictionary was written, called Hobson Jobson. -Opened up new culture, native Indians wanted to learn English. -Binglish and Hinglish are used well in media. -But not everyone uses English.
  • English settlers inte the Caribbean

    -A new form of English was formed: Creole.
    -Was like simplified english.
    -Allowed communication between slaves and the sailors.
    -Creole borrowed words from the indigenous people and from English as well as their own native language.
    -Some words we use today originated from Creole, for example tobacco and hammock,
    -The language varies between the islands, in some areas Creole is closer to English. (Jamaica = different and Barbados = closer)
    - It's not a language, it's an english dialect.
  • First fleet in Australia

    -Criminals from Britain was transported to Australia to start a new life there.
    -Before the travel the criminals used slang like flash which means "swag" (swag means robbery).
    -The fleet consisted mostly of men and their guards, there were less women than men.
    -Many did not know how to farm and because of that many starved to death,
    -The new environment also caused problems and contributed to the food problem.
    -Overtime early settlers lost their British accent.
    -Pom/Pommie = British
