William defeated the rebellion but he still didn't trust the English people. In the north-east of England he ordered villages to be destroyed and people to be killed. Herds of animals and crops were burnt. -

Eventually, Normans replaced the entire Anglo-Saxon aristocracy. William retained most of England's institutions and was intensely interested in learning about his new property. He ordered a detailed census to be made of the population and property of England. -

William's Death
William died in a riding accident when he fell off his horse. Upon the death of William, his son, William Rufus, became William II, the second Norman king of England.
