  • Chinese Exclusion Act

    Banned Chinese Immigration for the next 10 years due to a growing sentiment of nativism.
  • Immigration Act of 1891

    Allowed the government to deport illegal aliens and was the first comprehensive immigration laws the country had established.
  • Emergency Quota Act

    Allowed only a percentage of the current immigrants from a nation to come to America.
  • Immigration Reform and Control Act

    Allowed current illegal residents amnesty but increased border security.
  • Illegal Immigration Reform and Immigrant Responsibility Act

    This Act made border patrol more strict and also made welfare benefits for illegal immigrants harder to obtain.
  • Enhanced Border Security and Visa Entry Reform Act

    Created the Border Patrol Agency and required schools to report foreign students.

    Commonly called DACA, this program allowed children brought at a young age illegally to remain here to work or be educated.
