Mount Saint Helens Errupts
At 8:32 a.m. on this day, this eruption suprised many people, even though they had many warning signs. This erruption was the biggest in U.S. history, killing 57 people and about 7,000 large animals. -
Ronald Reagan is elected president

This atempted assasination was commited by young John Hinkcly Jr. this 2 year old open fired on the president, just outside the Washingtn Hilton Hotel. Reagan was hit by one bullet, which punctured his lung. The others were injured. -

First woman presidant: website #2Sandra Day O'Connor was personally nominated by US President Ronald Reagan to be the first woman in the Supreme Court. She won buy a vote of 99 to 0, and offically took her seat in October 25, 1981. -

Around this time Great Britain and Argentina fought over these i slands. On April 2, Argentina claimed that the islands belonged to them. Two months later they surrendered and the islands stayed under British control. -
Israel invades Lebanon
The neighboring states of Lebenon and Israel are home to two ancestrial rivals. The Jews in Israel and the Palestinians in Lebanon, so it was inevitable that there would be a conflict between the two. The two sides exchanged gunfire, and Israel launched air strikes. The US created a cease fire, but the war restarted when a Israeli soldier was killed by a land mine. The fighting ended in September by the creation of a buffer zone. -

This blockbuster hit definatly holds its own with some of the other astonishing achievments of the 80's. For one, this movie is over 20 years old, yet parents are still showing it to their kids today. It would go on to be a classic. -
Huge Gas Leak in Bhopal, India
During the night between the 2 and 3 of December, a storage tank containing methoyl isocyanate leaked a fair amount of gas into the highly populated city of Bhopal. It resulted in the death of up to an estimated 6,00 people. This was one of the worst industrial accidenrts in history. -
New Coke Marketing Disaster
Coke thought they had out done themsleves wit their new coke formula which was sweeer than their old formula. To their suprise after launch, US citizens were outraged by the switch. By July 11, 1985, th old coke was back on shelves. This considered one of the biggest marketing blunders ever. -

History of 80's: link #3On a joint American-French expedition a famous oceanographer Dr. Robert Ballard found thsi treasure two-miles below the surface of the water. He did this using an unmanned submersible the Argo. -
The Challenger explodes
On this day in history, this US achievment was supposed to spring forward many anvancments for our country. But, about 73 seconds into its launch something went wrong on board the rocket. As a result the Challenger exploded, killing all seven crew members on board. As a result of this, the shuttle program was shut down for about 32 months. -
The Charnobyl nuclear plant meltdown
This was the worst nuclear meltdown in history, and resulted in 800,000 people coming in contact with nuclear radiation. As of now, 4,000 people have died from this accident and it is said that it could lead to over 100,000 people dying of cancer in later yeasrs. -
The Tianman Square killing in China
After witnessing all Europesn communist states fall from afar, the Chinese people wnat the same freedom that the Europeans got. So they organized protests, starting in April 1989. The Government sent in tanks to deals with the protesters who were 100,000 in number. To this day know one knows how many died. -
The destruction of the Berlin Wall
It all started in 1987 when US president Ronald Peagan challenged the Soviet Union to tear down the Berlin Wall. By 1989 people took the matter into their own hands and started to tear the wall down for themselves. In October, 3 1990 Germany finally destroyed the wall for good.
