Timeline of Notable Technology

  • The Power Loom

    The Power Loom
Edmund Cartwright developed the first power loom. A loom is a device that is used to weave together threads in order to produce a fabric. Traditional handlooms were slow and required several laborers to operate, and now this machine was automated and wove a lot faster than a person would.

  • The Cotton Gin

    The Cotton Gin
Eli Whitney invented this machine to quickly separate cotton fibers from their seeds. This had previously been done by hand, which took hours of labor. This machine now allowed much greater productivity compared to manual cotton separation.

  • The Electrical Telegraph

    The Electrical Telegraph
Samuel Morse independently developed and patented a recording electric telegraph in 1837. Morse's assistant Alfred Vail developed an instrument called the register for recording the received messages. This was used for sending and receiving messages over a long distance.

  • The Telephone

    The Telephone
Alexander Graham Bell started working on the harmonic telegraph in 1871 and became preoccupied with finding a way to transmit the human voice over wires. By 1875, Bell, with the help of his partner Thomas Watson, had come up with a simple receiver that could turn electricity into sound.

  • The Lightbulb

    The Lightbulb
Though Thomas Edison is usually credited as the man who invented the lightbulb, he wasn't the only one who contributed to the development of this revolutionary technology. Many other notable inventors are also credited for the creation of the first incandescent bulbs. Light bulbs now allowed factories to stay open later so they could work longer hours of the day.

  • The Automobile

    The Automobile
Carl Benz applied for a patent for his vehicle powered by a gas engine on January 29th, 1886 which is regarded as the birth certificate of the automobile. In July 1886 the newspapers reported on the first public outing of the three-wheeled Benz Patent Motor Car. People could now have a way of faster transportation. Henry Ford is the one who perfected the assembly line.
