Development of the Kettering 'Bug'
The Kettering 'bug' was developed by the US over the period of WW1. It could reach speeds of 80kmph and was capable of striking ground targets up to 121 kilometres away. -
Lightning Bug use in the Vietnam War
The 'Ryan Model Lightning Bug' was used by the US for Reconnaissance missions whilst fighting the Communist Chinese in the Vietnam War. Between 1964 and 1975 more than 1000 Lightning Bugs flew over 34,000 surveillance missions. -
Development of the MQ-9 Reaper
Plans for the most widely used attack drone, the MQ-9 Reaper started in 2001. It wasn't used for military purpose until May 2007. They have a maximum speed of 482kmph and can stay airborne for up to 14 hours. -
Protests against the use of Drones
Ever since the first attack on the Al-Qaeda members in Yemen in 2002, protests against drone killing and drone surveillance have been breaking out all over. Many people question of the ethics behind the use of drones and believe that the civilian loss is to high. -
First reported Drone strike on Al-Qaeda
The US's first Drone strike on Al-Qaeda occured in November 2002. 6 people, believed to be members of Al-Qaeda were blown up in a car by a hellfire missile attack from a CIA unmanned RQ-1 predator aircraft. -
Strikes on Pakistan
Since 2004 , the CIA (Central Intelligence agency) has been doing aerial surveillance and assasinations across Pakistan to take down high profile targets and threats. It is estimated that there have been between 300 and 850 people civilians killed due to the missile strikes, including over 150 innocent children.As shown in the picture, residents of the areas effected aren't happy about it. -
Obama Drone campaign
Since 2012, Barrack Obama has sent drones to to the Middle-east to eliminate Al-Qaeda and ISIS Leaders. There has been over 230 drone strikes so far. -
Sydney Harbor Bridge collision
At 11 am, a drone crashed into the Sydney Harbor bridge. Police ruled out any potential threat and owner the owner was fined $850. This event lead to the introduction of 'drone guidlines' in Australia.
