Timeline of Projects for the Agriculture Industry

  • Development of the Flavr Savr Tomato (1987 to 21st May 1994). The purpose of the product was to allow full ripening (of the tomato) on the vine, thus enhancing the flavour, while still retaining a long shelf-life.

Development of the Flavr Savr Tomato (1987 to 21st May 1994). The purpose of the product was to allow full ripening (of the tomato) on the vine, thus enhancing the flavour, while still retaining a long shelf-life.
The Flavr Savr Tomato was a genetically modified variety of tomato developed by Californian company Calgene. The project was planned by Calgene. It was unique, being the first commercial GMO crop. It was temporary as Calgene were working to a schedule to release the product. The defined deliverable was the Flavr Savr tomato. The outcome of this project was the successful development of a tomato with the desired traits. http://calag.ucanr.edu/Archive/?article=ca.v054n04p6
  • Development of Golden Rice (1982 to 1999).The purpose of Golden Rice was to provide a dietary source of beta- carotene (a precursor of vitamin A) to people in areas where vitamin A deficiency was common.

Golden rice is a genetically modified variety of rice developed by Ingo Potrykus and Peter Beyer in the 1990s. The project was planned by the scientists involved. Golden rice is a unique variety of rice. The project was temporary as they aimed to complete is A.S.A.P. The defined deliverable was the new variety of rice. The outcome of this project was a variety of rice with the desired traits.

  • Plant based DHA omega-3 canola oil: The purpose is to develop canola seeds with the profile that includes long-chain omega-3 fatty acids

Plant based DHA omega-3 canola oil: The purpose is to develop canola seeds with the profile that includes long-chain omega-3 fatty acids
The project was executed by Nuseed in collaboration with (CSIRO) and the Grains Research and Development in Australia.
The project was unique, because it is the first land-based omega-3 under Research and Development. The project was planned to develop a sustainable source of land-based, long-chained omega-3 oil. The outcome is to initially commercialise the omega-3 oil for aquaculture feeds, followed by human applications.

  • Canterbury Irrigation Scheme - Stage ONE: The purpose of Stage One was to produce a Large canal system from the Rakaia river to the Hororata river

Canterbury Irrigation Scheme - Stage ONE: The purpose of Stage One was to produce a Large canal system from the Rakaia river to the Hororata river
Stage 1 of the Central Plains Water Scheme, executed by CPWL was to construct a 17km canal system, to deliver water from the Rakaia River to farmland via a 130km long piped distribution network. The canal is 30m wide and 5m deep and provides pressurized irrigation water to 23,000 Hectares of connected farmland.
The canal extends from the Rakaia river to the Hororata river.
The budget was ~$250 million and began in May 2014 with a delivery target of September 2015.

  • The 2015 Eradication of Queensland Fruit Fly (February 2015 to 4th December 2015). This Projects purpose was to eradicate an infestation of Queensland fruit flies in Auckland.

The 2015 Eradication of Queensland Fruit Fly (February 2015 to 4th December 2015). This Projects purpose was to eradicate an infestation of Queensland fruit flies in Auckland.
This Project was executed by MPI, horticulture industry partners KVH, Pipfruit New Zealand and Horticulture New Zealand, Auckland Council and the local community. The project was unique as it was specific to the one species and located in one place. A specific plan then had to be made based on these factors. It was tempory as it had defined deliverable to complete. Its outcome was that it eradicated Queensland fruit flies in Auckland. https://www.biosecurity.govt.nz
  • Canterbury Irrigation Scheme - Stage TWO . The purpose of stage two was to build a pipeline between the Selwyn and Waimakariri Rivers

Canterbury Irrigation Scheme - Stage TWO . The purpose of stage two was to build a pipeline between the Selwyn and Waimakariri Rivers
Stage 2 was carried out by Downer from May 2017 to May 2018 and included constructing a 23km subterranean pipeline to connect additional farmland to the canal water supply system constructed during Stage 1.
Downer laid 200km of pipeline between the Selwyn and Waimakariri Rivers with a budget of ~$200m and a 12 month target. The key difference of this project is the use of a pipeline instead of continuing the canal system. All infrastructure on Stage 2 is buried.

  • Inclusive Agriculture Cambodia (June 2017 to March 2018, Kampong Chhnang Cambodia ) its purpose was to work with people with disabilities in rural Cambodia. Helping them to co design and improve agriculture technology.

Inclusive Agriculture Cambodia (June 2017 to March 2018, Kampong Chhnang Cambodia ) its purpose was to work with people with disabilities in rural Cambodia. Helping them to co design and improve agriculture technology.
It was executed by Massey University, Engineers Without Borders Australia, Light for the world, Agile Development Group and local people. it was unique as it was related to the specific people/area that had individual needs. It was tempory as it had a natural end date. The outcome was to improve social inclusion for people with disabilities and develop better technologies to help with day to day life.

  • The Catch Crop: The purpose of this project is to develop mitigations and sustainable solutions for reducing sediment and nutrient losses of winter crops

The Catch Crop: The purpose of this project is to develop mitigations and sustainable solutions for reducing sediment and nutrient losses of winter crops
The project was executed by The Sediment Catch Crop Mitigation group, led by a team of rural specialists and scientists from across New Zealand. The project is unique, because it is undertaking in-depth research around economic and environmental benefits of catch crops. The project was temporary, as it is a 3 year project. The outcome, will be results to provide understanding of the value of catch crops, both economically and environmentally.
