Timeline of the Khmer Empire

  • Period: 100 to 550

    Funan

    A lower Mekong River society called Funan is mentioned in Chinese records.
  • Period: 500 to Dec 31, 700

    Zhenla

    Hindu Mekong kingdom of Khmers called Zhenla, or Chenla by the Chinese, take over Funan.
  • Period: Jan 1, 770 to Dec 31, 850

    Jayavarman II the Founder of the Khmer Empire.

    King Jayavarnam II comes to power in 802 CE Chenla as a Hindu devaraja (god-king). He renames Chenla to Kambuja. King Jayavarman builds the Khmer Empire by uniting all states in the Angkor region. He established a new capital at Hariharalaya. By the time of his death (850 CE) the empire had grown alot. More temples, palaces and libraries had been built.

    Banteay Srei

    Banteay Srei
    A Cambodian temple dedicated to the Hindu god Shiva was built named Banteay Srei. Built by a Brahmin high priest, Yajnavaraha, during the time of Rajendravarman II rule.

    Angkor Wat

    Angkor Wat
    Suryavarman II in reign and the Angkor Wat, dedicated to Hindu god Vishnu, is built. Though during this time Buddhism becomes main religion in Kambuja.

    The invasion and pillage from the Chams

    Chams, Hindu state in whats is now central Vietnam, invades and pillage the Angkor kingdom.
  • Period: Jan 1, 1181 to Dec 31, 1219

    King Jayarvman VII

    Jayavarman VII, who defeats Chams, ascends to throne. He expandes the Khmer empire to the greatest extent, incorporating regions of present-day Laos, Burma, and Thailand. Jayarvarnam follows Mahayana Buddhism, begins building city of Angkor Thom with the Bayon Temple. During he's rule Jayavarman conducts series of battles between Cham, Thai and the Vietnamese, which the cost to maintain his army was expensive.
  • Period: Dec 1, 1220 to Dec 31, 1431

    Pushing back of the area of the Khmer Empire

    After the death of King Jayavarman VII the Cham kingdom and Thais launch a series of attacks and pushes back the boundary of the Khmer. Buddhism grew in popularity during this time and the resources left from the Khmer were decreasing.

    Last Khmer king to use Angkor as the capital abandoned it.

    Thais defeat the Khmers and the Khmer Empire becomes a vassal state of the Thais.
